Weekly Update
August 30, 2024
From the Principal
Dear Aquin Families,
Wow, this was a week of hot weather! The kids did great with the small changes to their schedules, and we even got to do a little fun activity on Tuesday with Bingo and Culver's ice cream in the air-conditioned cafeteria (thanks to the Colby Smith Run).
Now that we are in a better routine, we will begin doing some emergency drills next week. We do three types of drills, evacuate (fire drill), shelter-in-place (tornado) and displace (move to another part of the building). We will practice all three over the course of the year. We try not to scare the kids, but we are serious when we practice as these drills are very important. The most important job your child has during the drill is to LISTEN to the adult giving instructions and follow them. I am happy to answer any questions you may have. We take pride in our school safety and thank Sheriff Steve Stovall for all his help and training!
Another safety reminder is that when you come to the school and use the doorbell to enter, we need you to check into the office first. Our office is not right by the door so it can be tempting to turn the opposite way and go to your child's classroom. Please do not do that. It is our job to keep everyone safe and in the event of an emergency we would need to account for you as well as your child. In addition, we need to sign your child in or out properly. Thank you for your help!
Remember, we are closed Monday in observance of Labor Day.
Have a great long weekend!
Mrs. Heitkamp
New Academic Testing Program
Due to the discontinuation of the Iowa FLEX assessment, the Diocese has selected a new academic testing program. Attached is a letter explaining the new assessment program.
Grades for Students in Grades 3-8
As your child's teacher enters grades into FACTS, they become available for you to review in the family portal. This is a good way for you and your child to review their work, grades and any potential missing assignments. If you have trouble getting into the family portal, please let us know in the office.
Attendance Procedures
Please contact Mrs. Gaulrapp if your child needs to be absent or tardy.
If your child is late to school, please come to the Galena Street entrance by the office and have your child check in at the office before heading to class.
