The Cougar Connection
Lafayette Elementary May 5th, 2025
Dear Lafayette Families,
This weekend Megan spent time with her nieces doing sidewalk chalk and caught up on some work. We also celebrate grandmom’s 102nd birthday from afar! Robin worked on her lawn and enjoyed the beautiful weather!
Lafayette Elementary is looking for our next DAC (District Accountability Committee) representative. DAC meets just a few times a year and our rep will bring district news to our SAC (School Accountability Committee). Please reach out to Megan if you are interested- we would *REALLY* appreciate it!
Our kindergarten information session last week was a great success! If you know of any families with rising kindergartners in the neighborhood, please encourage them to register so we can share important information and help them feel welcome.
A big thank-you to everyone who supported our annual Field Day! Our incredible PE teacher, Maria Mischke along with her student assistants, organized a fantastic event. Check out a few photos below!
Yearbooks for the 2024–2025 school year will be sent home with students on May 16th in their Friday Folders. If you haven’t ordered one yet, there’s still time—families can place an order online and have it shipped directly to their home. Treering Ordering Link
Next year, instead of asking families to purchase individual school supplies, we are requesting a monetary contribution to help cover the cost. Our leadership team made this decision after thoughtful discussion, with the goal of streamlining the process and ensuring equity for all students.
While we know that many families enjoy shopping for supplies, your donations allow teachers to purchase exactly what they need—when they need it—throughout the year. Buying in bulk and using the school’s tax-exempt status helps stretch every dollar further. As a Green Star School, we also strive to reduce waste—no more dried-out glue sticks sitting unused!
Next week, we will post a link where families can contribute $40 per student, plus $5 to support our specials classes, for a total of $45. Payments will be made through BVSD’s RevTrak system. Please note that you may need to create a new account, even if you’ve used RevTrak for another BVSD school. Payments can be made by credit card or directly from your bank account. We also gladly accept cash or checks made out to Lafayette Elementary.
If you are able to give more, we welcome additional contributions to help support families who may not be able to donate at this time.
Thank you for your generosity and for helping make this a great year for all of our students. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact our office.
As we head out on spring field trips, please be extra vigilant—it's tick season. We recommend that students wear long sleeves, pants, and closed-toe shoes when exploring grassy or wooded areas. Don’t forget to check for ticks after outdoor activities!
Have a great week!
Sincerely,
Megan Weir, Principal and Robin Stone, Dean of Students

2025-2026 Parent Input
It's already that time to look ahead at the 2025-2026 school year again! At Lafayette Elementary, we work collaboratively to ensure that every student is placed in the optimal learning environment each school year.
When creating class lists, we thoughtfully consider a variety of factors, including class ratios, student dynamics, and individual needs, in order to build balanced and supportive classrooms. Your input is an important part of this process!
If there is anything you’d like us to know that may help with class placement, please share it below. This information will be reviewed by the entire grade-level team. Please note that we are not able to accommodate requests for specific teachers.
The form will close on May 16th.
Kindergarten Dyslexia Screener Results
Parents can now access individual student score reports for the Kindergarten Dyslexia Screener. Access the result on Infinite Campus with these parent/student directions.
Summer Garden Help Needed
Our wonderful students are getting the school garden planted this month. We need your help this summer to ensure we have a thriving crop when students return in the fall. Please consider “adopting” the garden for a week. Come pull a few weeds and check that everything is in order two or three times during your week. It’s a fun activity for the whole family that can have a big impact for our garden curriculum. Sign-up Here

Counselor's Corner
Dear Families,
As we approach the end of another school year, I want to take a moment to reflect on the incredible growth our students have made throughout the year. It has been a joy to witness their learning, friendships, and accomplishments.
Transitions Ahead
For many of our students, May marks a significant transition as they prepare to either move on to the next grade or, for our fifth graders, transition to middle school. This change can bring about a mix of excitement and anxiety. It’s natural to have questions and concerns, and I encourage you to have open discussions with your child about their feelings regarding these changes.
A Special Note for Our Fifth Graders
To our fifth-grade families, congratulations on reaching this important milestone! As your children prepare for middle school, it is an excellent opportunity to encourage their independence and self-advocacy. Here are a few tips to support them:
Visit the New School: Rising Angevine Bobcats Meet-up - Families with rising 6th graders, join other parents for a casual ‘mixer’ on Sun, 5/18 @ 3:30p @ the Lafayette Library. RSVP on the attached form, so that we honor the library's capacity rules.
Discuss Expectations: Talk about the differences they might encounter, such as changing classes, managing a locker, and more extensive homework.
Encourage Friendships: Help your child stay connected with their friends and make new ones, as social support is vital during this transition.
Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Ideas for Summer
Summer is a wonderful time for relaxation and enjoyment, but it’s also an excellent opportunity for continued learning and growth. Here are some SEL activities you can engage in with your children:
Mindfulness Activities: Introduce simple mindfulness exercises, such as deep breathing or nature walks, to help your child stay grounded and present.
Gratitude Journals: Encourage your child to keep a journal where they can write or draw about things they are grateful for each day.
Community Service: Participate in community service projects as a family. Helping others fosters empathy and a sense of belonging.
Family Meetings: Hold regular family meetings to discuss feelings, share successes, and set goals for the upcoming school year.
Reading Together: Choose books that explore themes of friendship, resilience, and personal growth. Discuss the characters' emotions and decisions to enhance understanding.
As always, I am here to support you and your children. If you have any questions or need assistance, please feel free to reach out. Wishing you a wonderful and fulfilling summer ahead!
Warm regards,
Ms. Anna
