As the school year winds down with only one month left, our students are striving to end it on a high note. Report cards will be sent home on May 23 for elementary, and mailed out on May 30 for secondary students.

May flowers bring plenty of learning inspiration! This month’s calendar is filled with math, science, play, and reading activities to celebrate holidays like May Day, Love a Tree Day, and Children’s Book Week.
Character Trait: The May Character Trait word is Self-Control. School counselors and Social Emotional Learning Specialists will provide Character Education lessons on Self-Control. They will also assist with Social Emotional Learning lessons on identifying emotions, self-regulation skills, anger management, conflict resolution, and peer mediation.
Mental Wellness Matters: May is Mental Health Awareness month! Check out www.killeenisd.org/mwm for weekly tips and upcoming events to support mental wellness.

KISD teams are preparing for postseason games!
Killeen ISD will send five individuals and two relays to the Class 5A UIL Track and Field State Championships on May 3. Chaparral’s Maddie Fey, Killeen’s Aaliyah Barnes, and Shoemaker’s Malik Esquerra qualified in two individual events. Chaparral’s Trinity Brown and Killeen’s Antwoine Warren qualified in one. Meanwhile, the Shoemaker boys will have their 4x100-meter and 4x200 relays in competition at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin.
The softball and baseball playoffs are about to get underway. This year’s KISD postseason teams are the Shoemaker Lady Grey Wolves in softball and the Shoemaker and Chaparral baseball teams.

Spring football practice started at four high schools and concludes with spring games: Ellison, May 9; Killeen, Shoemaker and Harker Heights on May 16.
The middle school track and field season concluded in April. Congratulations to Patterson’s seventh- and eighth-grade girls, and seventh-grade boys, and Palo Alto’s eighth-grade boys for their team championships.
Middle school swim, golf, tennis and soccer currently are in progress.

26 KISD High School Visual Art Students Compete in State VASE
On April 27, high school students from all Killeen ISD high schools competed at the State Visual Art Scholastic Event. Students and teachers visited the McNay Art Museum, toured the Studio Art spaces at UT San Antonio and saw 94 year’s worth of local art at the San Antonio Art League & Museum. Students also participated in workshops, and portfolio reviews and had the chance to medal or be named part of the prestigious Gold Seal Gallery at the state-wide event. Registration is Open for Fine Arts Summer Camps

- Summer Musical Theater Camp welcomes KISD students entering 5th through 8th grade. Students are not required to be enrolled in theatre. Participants will explore singing, dancing, and acting through the performance, "Ever After." Students must attend auditions on from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on either May 21 or 22 at Killeen High School. All students who register for camp will be cast in the production. A public final showing will be held on June 6 at 4 p.m. Each student will receive a camp t-shirt and snacks.
- Theatre Camp is open to KISD students entering 9th through 12th grade. Students are not required to be enrolled in theatre to participate. Students will work both on-stage and behind the scenes to bring Ken Ludwig’s "Treasure Island" to life. Auditions for performers are on May 21 or 22 at Chaparral High School, from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Students only interested in technical roles do not require an audition. The final performance will be on June 13 at 1:30 p.m. Students will receive a camp t-shirt and snacks.
- Summer Orchestra Camp is open to all Killeen ISD Orchestra students in grades 6-8. At camp, orchestra students will work on All-Region music in preparation for All-Region auditions next fall. Students will also play fun music and have fun with their friends with games and activities.
- Summer Band Camp is open to all Killeen ISD students who are enrolled in band, grades 6-12. At the camp, the students will participate in rehearsals, sectionals, masterclasses, and music electives. The camp will be filled with games, themed days, and fun activities.
