Abstract: This presentation will review various ethical dilemmas and explore how the licensure board’s Code of Ethics can be an effective resource to resolve dilemmas and educate others about the role of speech-language pathologists and educational audiologists in the school setting.

Learning Objectives:

Name/describe ethical dilemmas/issues that school-based practitioners may encounter.
State ethical requirements adopted by the licensure board to resolve ethical dilemmas.
State how the licensure board’s Code of Ethics can be an effective resource with educating others about your role as a licensed practitioner and ethical responsibilities to your students.
Identify when the practitioner has a duty to report ethical violations.

Resolving Ethical Dilemmas: Best Practices for School-based SLPs and AUDs

What time should I arrive at the training site? Please arrive 15 minutes early to each session to complete the check-in process. Please enter through entrance #3 around the back side of the building and check in with the front desk before proceeding to the assigned training area.

Food & Beverage: Coffee, bottled water, and assorted snacks will be available throughout the workshops. Soda will be available to purchase for an additional $0.50 from the front desk.

Our Cancellation Policy:

We recognize that things happen; however, please provide at least a week's notice for cancellation. While this is a free event, we would like to have a minimum number of participants to make it worth the speaker's time.
The Madison-Champaign ESC does not cancel or delay workshops for inclement weather unless the ESC itself is closed. The ESC will only close if Champaign County is under a Level 2 or 3 "Snow Emergency." While we understand that emergencies arise, the cancellation policy is still in effect for inclement weather cancellations, so please plan accordingly.

About the Speaker

Gregg B. Thornton, Esq., is a licensed attorney and has been the Executive Director of the Ohio Speech and Hearing Professionals (SHP) since January 2018, and of the former Ohio Board of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology since March of 2009. SHP regulates over 10,000 speech-language pathology, audiology, hearing aid dealers and hearing aid fitter’s licenses. Mr. Thornton graduated with honors from Howard University in Washington, D.C., receiving a B.A. in political science and his J.D. from Case Western Reserve University School of Law. He has received many awards and been recognized for his contributions in state government with 32 years of service. He is frequently invited to speak on ethics and has co-authored on the topic. He is an affiliate member with the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, American Academy of Audiology, International Hearing Society, and is on the Board of Directors (President 2020-2021) with the National Council of State Boards of Examiners.
