January 2024
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Principal Message
Happy New Year and welcome back from the winter break! We missed our scholars and their smiling faces over the break but our campus is now buzzing with the familiar hum of excitement and learning!
January marks a fresh start, a chance to renew our commitment to learning, growth, and success. And just like a crisp winter morning, it's the perfect time to embrace new challenges with determination and a spirit of perseverance.
Our scholars are capable of amazing things. They're curious explorers, creative problem-solvers, and budding leaders. Every day they'll encounter hurdles, big and small. But with the unwavering support and encouragement of both our families and staff, they'll learn to navigate those challenges with resilience and grace.
Here are a few ways we can all support scholars success in January:
- Celebrate small victories: Every step forward, no matter how seemingly insignificant, is a cause for celebration. Acknowledge their efforts, not just their end results.
- Foster a growth mindset: Encourage students to embrace challenges as opportunities to learn and grow. Remind them that mistakes are stepping stones, not setbacks.
- Teamwork makes the dream work: Let's work together, students, parents, and educators, to create a supportive and inspiring learning environment where everyone feels valued and empowered.
Let's make Shady Cove School a place where:
- Curiosity is ignited, not extinguished.
- Perseverance is rewarded, not ridiculed.
- Every student feels seen, heard, and valued.
Together, we can make 2024 a year of remarkable growth, unforgettable learning experiences, and unwavering support for one another.

Paper Tutor 6th-8th Grade
If you have a middle school student, have you heard of Paper Tutor? Our scholars have access to 24/7 tutoring (by a real person). They have an app on their iPad that can help them with homework as well as classwork. These tutors will even help edit their papers. Paper Tutor is a one year pilot for EPHS and SCMS to see how it will help support our students. See the slide show below to learn more about Paper Tutor and ask your child about it. It truly is amazing. If you have any questions regarding this resource don't hesitate to reach out to their teacher or contact our office and Mrs. Isackson would be happy to share how it works.

January Character Trait-Perseverance
This month is all about Perseverance. One way to think about Perseverance is “pushing yourself through challenges and obstacles.” We all experience challenges in our lives. We all have moments when we feel like we can’t do it or that we want to give up on a big task. It is important to develop tools that help us work through those challenges in order to grow in those moments instead of giving up. How might you practice Perseverance as a family this month? Perseverance is 1 of 3 traits we will focus on throughout the year that helps students Be Strong. Across grade levels, students will be developing skills like focusing, organizing, and goal-setting.
Conversations starters you could have with your kids:
Can you share or show what it means to have Perseverance?
When working towards goals, how does Perseverance help us to reach them?
Referrals
What is a referral? This is a way we collect data on behaviors. Sometimes referrals come with a consequence, whether it be a natural consequence or disciplinary action.
If a staff member writes a referral then they must look at the definition matrix to determine if it truly is a referral and/or if it is a minor or major referral. We share this matrix with our students and it is also located in the student handbook, which is located on the student's iPad. As a staff we calibrate with this matrix so that we are all writing referrals the same way and for the same behavior.
Staff members are required to contact a guardian when a referral is written and we appreciate your support when we make this call. We understand that students are here to learn and grow. Our goal is to change an undesirable behavior and for the student to learn from this.
School Board Recognition Month
Eagle Point School District joins Oregon communities in celebrating School Board Recognition Month this January!
We're dedicating this month to thanking our phenomenal school board members, who tirelessly devote countless unpaid hours to ensuring the best possible education for our students. Beyond the classroom, they act as the corporate board of directors for one of our community's largest employers, a true testament to their dedication and expertise.
They are the bridge between citizens' voices and the complex world of running our public schools. They champion local control over education, a cornerstone of Oregon's educational landscape. Their efforts often go unseen, but their impact reaches every corner of our community.
Their guiding vision? Student achievement. That's what drives their every decision, from setting high standards to measuring progress and optimizing resources. They create safe learning environments, foster collaboration, and strive for continuous improvement, always putting our students first.
On January 24th, during our School Board meeting, we'll shower our board members with gratitude. Shady Cove School will even present each of them with a unique T-shirt designed by one of our talented students – a small token of appreciation for their immense contributions.
While this month serves as a dedicated time to express our thanks, let's remember that their commitment extends far beyond January. They are the unwavering champions of our students, working year-round to ensure their success.
Join us in celebrating these dedicated individuals who shape the future of our community, one student at a time.

IPAD INSURANCE
iPad insurance is $25 per student. It may be paid through ParentVue or by sending check or cash to school with your scholar. We highly recommend this insurance. You never know when an accident is going to happen. If you have not paid the insurance then you will be responsible for the cost to fix or replace the iPad.
IPad insurance is an annual fee. If you had insurance for the 2022-23 school year it is still effective until September 6, 2023. During the 2023-2024 school year, EPSD9 will continue to offer optional iPad insurance to students and families. The annual insurance will be effective from September 6, 2023-September 5, 2024. The cost for the insurance is $25.00. Without insurance, students will be responsible for all repair or replacement costs. If your student did not have iPad insurance for the 2022-23 school year, students will need to bring their iPad to the office to verify the condition of the iPad prior to acceptance of your insurance payment. Please click on this link for more information on iPad Insurance.
