First Friday Message from Dr. Davies
February 7, 2025
Greetings, Bulldog Community:
Nearly a century ago, in 1925, Negro History Week was conceived by the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History—now known as the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH)—to highlight the valuable contributions of African Americans to the United States. Officially recognized in 1926, this week-long observance in February quickly became an integral part of American culture.
Fifty years later, in 1976, the celebration expanded into Black History Month, providing an even greater opportunity to honor the rich history of African American culture and its profound impact on the nation.
To deepen your understanding and engage with this history, I encourage you and your family to explore the resources available online. The National Archives African American website and National Geographic for Kids offer valuable learning tools for all ages. Additionally, the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture provides a wealth of educational materials and insights.
On another note, last week, I had the pleasure of visiting Trimmer Elementary, where 5th-grade students were preparing for Junior Achievement (JA) BizTown—an immersive program sponsored by Junior Achievement of York County. Alongside community members and fellow District Administrators, I interviewed students applying for various roles in anticipation of their upcoming visit to the BizTown Center. This hands-on experience helps students develop essential career and financial literacy skills, making it one of many exciting and impactful programs offered by JA.
If you're looking for a meaningful way to give back, I encourage you to learn more about Junior Achievement and consider volunteering. Your time and expertise could make a lasting difference in a child’s educational journey!
February also brings an exciting lineup of theatrical performances at both our Middle and High Schools. Our talented young thespians pour their hearts into these productions, delivering performances that showcase their hard work and passion for the arts. For show details and ticket information, please see below.
Finally, on February 11th, immediately before our Work Session, the School Board will interview candidates to fill the Board seat vacated last month by Director Siatkowski. We are fortunate to have six qualified candidates who are willing to give of their time for the betterment of our District and community. I thank them for stepping up and look forward to meeting them on February 11th.
Thank you for your continued support of the West York Area School District and our mission of Every Student Every Day.
Best regards,
Todd M. Davies, Ed.D.

Upcoming Theatrical Events
Middle School: No Body to Murder
"No Body to Murder," by Edith Weiss, is a humorous whodunnit that will keep you laughing as you piece together the clues! The guests of the "Come On Inn" inn are all suspects of a murder that happened during a severe weather threat and the news of an escaped convict on the loose. Who could have committed this crime? Was it the cook who poisoned the lemonade? The gardener who shaves with an axe? Or maybe the mime with a broken heart?
Tickets will be sold at the door for $5 per adult and $3 per student. Concessions will be available for purchase.

The West York Bulldog Pantry is a non-perishable food center located in the High School, open to ALL District families, regardless of financial need, from kindergarten through 12th grade. Household items are also available. Pick-up is at Door 14 at the High School near the tennis courts. For distribution dates and times, please visit the pantry’s page on the District website.

School Board Meetings
Each month, from August through June, regularly scheduled meetings (Work Sessions and Voting Meetings) of the School Board are held in the Boardroom of the Administration Building. In addition to the two regular meetings, the School Board also hosts Board Committee Meetings. All are welcome to attend any of these public meetings. In-person attendance is recommended, but we also offer viewing-only attendance via Zoom during most Board meetings. Work Sessions and Voting Meetings are live-streamed on our District YouTube Channel.
We publish a monthly Board Bulletin, which summarizes the Work Session and Board Voting Meeting that occur during the month. The bulletin will be emailed to all families in the same manner you received this communication. Click here to view the January 2025 issue.
The link below provides more information about the meetings, agendas, and other information. If you have questions about meeting attendance that are not addressed here or on our website, please contact Tina Keeler at trkeeler@wyasd.org.
