Greetings Shaw Montessori!
This week we reopened our Outdoor Environment for the primary. In this space, our children have the daily opportunity to experience the natural world with structure and purpose. They learn how to use their hands in everyday endeavors focused on the care of the earth, its people and animals. Respect for the environment and for each other is enhanced by group activities that require care for tools and materials, cooperation with peers and completion of tasks.
At SHAW MONTESSORI our outdoor environment is funded SOLELY through tax credit donations provided by you and any other generous resident of Arizona. No funding=no salaries of the outdoor environment teachers=no garden. Please consider making your donation soon.
There are two ways to donate. You may do it electronically here: https://www.phxschools.org/tax-credit If you are donating for the garden or the outdoor environment you may choose the “greatest need” category for Shaw. We then direct it to our outdoor spaces. Or you may stop in the school office and our office manager Claire would be happy to take your donations. Please review the PDF below for all the ways our children benefit from our tax credit donations. It is a win/win!
Monday, September 2nd school will be closed in observance of Labor Day. Please remember that Wednesday, September 4th is a full day for the kindergarten-8th grades.
Enjoy the long weekend!
Wishing you the best,
Principal Engdall

Elementary Garden
Greetings!
Our fifth week at Shaw and we’re still rockin. Middle school continued to weed the annual flower beds and we planted flowers along our vegetable furrows. The watermelons are thriving in this heat. Our next block will be watermelon popsicles. Only one more week of verdolagas.
There was a family of bunnies that were living in the garden. They emerged from their burrow a couple weeks ago and have been hopping all over campus. We caught one on the playground on Monday. We rereleased it in the garden among the watermelons and purslane. Sadly, the feral cats caught it that night Such is life in the garden. We caught another on Wednesday and decided the best thing to do was nurture it at home for a while until it can be released back into the wild. Surely, it will have a better chance than with our garden kitties.
WE NEED PARENT VOLUNTEERS FOR OUR NATIVE PLANTING DAY ON SEPTEMBER 14th. Please click the link to register to help us move rock, dig holes and plant.
The following volunteer dates are on the calendar:
· September 14th (native planting day)
· September 28th (parent workday)
· December 3rd & 5th (holiday concert afterparty)
· February 22nd (2nd parent workday)
You can access the volunteer signup site by clicking on this link: https://signup.com/group/1135044326099
We are always seeking coffee grounds, seeds, aluminum cans and MASON JARS. PLEASE, NO MORE EGGSHELLS. If you have anything that might benefit our garden program, please contact me via email. Otherwise, the front table outside of the office is our designated drop-off location for garden essentials. james.obrien-moench@phxschools.org
Enjoy your holiday!

Bingo Night is just around the corner, and we’re so excited to make it an unforgettable evening with fabulous prizes, raffle items, and even a glow-in-the-dark round! But here’s the thing—we need 23 volunteers to help make it happen, and we’d love for you to be one of them. We’re counting on our fantastic community to step up, and it wouldn’t be the same without you! Let’s fill the room with excited bingo players and make this event a huge success with your help. Ready to jump in? Sign up here and be part of the fun!

Shaw Supper Night
We are rebranding Tasty Tuesdays because they do not always fall on a Tuesday.
Introducing the first ever…
Shaw Supper night!
The event will be at Someburros in uptown Phoenix on Wednesday, September 4th.
New families- this is a fundraiser for the PTA and the proceeds are used to pay for pizza at our PTA meetings. Our kids love it because they get to see their peers outside of school, and we parents/guardians get the night off from preparing a meal. It’s a win-win! Hope to see some of you there!
**Please mention that you are with Shaw when ordering/picking up food so we get your portion of the donation.
