Update for B-C-S Families
July 23, 2020
Dear B-C-S Families:
Pardon the long email, but there is a lot of important information to share.
1* Benton-Carroll-Salem Schools issued a "Progress Report" on July 10 (see attached) concerning the opening of the 2020-21 school year. We aim to release a "Final Report" to all on August 7. I have had many questions about lunch, recess, lockers, music, and PE...all good questions. All of these issues and more will be discussed in detail on August 7. I can tell you that we will be following the guidance of health professionals on all these issues. We are really looking at every moment of the student's day--from bus pick up to hallways to lockers to the bus trip home--to mitigate risk.
I can tell you that one change that you will likely see when we release the Final Report on August 7 is that we will open the school year by requiring face coverings for students in grades 3-12 (with an exception for health reasons-details on this to come) when physical distancing is impossible such as in hallways and entering/exiting buildings. This is being done upon the recommendation of the Ottawa County Health Department. We are going to provide a clear plastic face shield for all students. We will also have disposable cloth masks available. Students will also be able to wear their own school-appropriate face covering from home. On advice of the Ottawa County Health Department, we are going to be able to allow students to remove their face covering while seated at desks/tables behind their own tri fold shield or table divider, which we have purchased. These items are plastic and can be easily disinfected. See the images below. Face coverings for all B-C-S staff will be required. Face coverings will also be required on school buses for students in grades 3-12 (with an exception for health reasons).
2* The Rocket Online Learning Option will use Schools PLP as the online curriculum for students. This curriculum covers grades K-12. You can watch the videos below to learn more information about the program.
There will be assistance for B-C-S students from B-C-S Staff for students involved with the Rocket Online Learning Option if the student has a question or struggle. However, the help will not be provided "live," and will have to be requested via email or phone call. Students who do the Rocket Online Learning Option will certainly not be abandoned by B-C-S because they will remain our students. We are invested in the success of ALL of our students. If students are struggling they will not be left to fend for themselves. Participation and school work expectations and grades will be issued to students in the Rocket Online Learning Option. Students will be able to participate in athletics and extra-curricular activities if they participate in the Rocket Online Learning Option. Athletic participation will require eligibility.
Those parents who indicated an interest in the Rocket Online Learning Option will receive a detailed communication about the program next week, and will be asked to make a commitment to it by August 14. Parents will have to make a commitment for at least one full 9 week period for their child.
3* We are excited to announce that Benton-Carroll-Salem Schools has partnered with Final Forms, an online forms and data-management service. Final Forms will allow you to easily complete and sign enrollment, contract, and athletic participation forms for your students. Best of all, Final Forms saves data from year to year so that you will never need to enter the same information twice. You will be able to view your data at any time to make sure it is current. Sometime next week, you will receive an email from Final Forms to register and create your account. Final Forms also will have a link that will allow you to pay school and athletic fees by credit card! You should be able to use Final Forms on a computer or smartphone. If anyone has any trouble with Final Forms please call your child's school.
4* For those who do not wish to use Final Forms to pay their student/athletic fees, we will be holding District-wide fee collection (for all K-12 families) at Oak Harbor High School on August 18 and August 20 from 9am to 8pm. Masks and physical distancing will be required to enter the building.
5* Students and parents will be receiving information about bus number and approximate pick up times during the week of August 10.
6* The first day of school remains August 26. As of this moment, we still plan to open under plan A, which is all students attending every day. This continues to be evaluated. We all have to prepare to be flexible and evolve as conditions with this pandemic evolve. This is an anxious and uncertain time so please make sure you all are taking care of yourselves. If there is something we can do to help please call the school. Also be aware of the Crisis Text Line. You can text HOME to 741741 to reach a crisis counselor at any time. Please share with anyone who may need this. Below is a link to more information about the Crisis Text Line.

Thank you, and I appreciate your flexibility and patience.

B-C-S Transportation Form
DUE ASAP!
June 25, 2020
Dear Parents and/or Guardians,
Please complete the Student Transportation Request Form for the 2020—21 school year. Assume that we will be in regular session, 5 days per week, as we were at the beginning of last school year for purposes of completing this form. Each family will need to fill out one form.
You may select one morning bus pick-up location for your child, and one afternoon bus drop-off location for your child for the entire school year. The morning and afternoon addresses may be different. If the morning or afternoon location is different from your home location, it must be along an existing bus route and the bus must have space available. We no longer do Alternate Site forms. Please fill out the form even if one or more of your children do not need bus transportation. This is the same transportation policy as we had last year.
You can complete this form by clicking the link below. DUE ASAP.

Mental Health and Well Being
These are challenging times for adults, and more so for young people. If you think your child can benefit from talking to a counselor, please do not hesitate to call your child's school on March 30 or after.
I also want to remind you of the Crisis Text Line:
Text HOME to 741741 from anywhere in the United States, anytime, about any type of crisis.
One suggestion for our overall mental health is for us to all get outside and walk, or do some kind of physical activity (while practicing social distancing). Something as simple as a walk can do wonders for the mood and help with anxiety.
