UPCOMING ARLETA EVENTS
BIPOC FAMILY GATHERING - OCT 1
Our first BIPOC families gathering of the year is scheduled for Tuesday, October 1st from 5:30-7pm at Arleta in Room 4. Please join the conversation about what you would like to see and do during this time together by joining the Konstella Social Group "BIPOC Family Group". Questions? Contact Arleta's SUN Lead, Raina Bilbrew, at rbilbrew@pps.net or parent, Sheryl, at sha_r_@hotmail.com.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED AT PPS/PTA CLOTHING CLOSET - OCT 3
The PPS/PTA Clothing Closet is where PPS students can "shop" for free clothes twice a year when referred by a school counselor. This past school year, the Center assisted nearly 1,400 PPS students! Arleta's days to volunteer are Thursdays, October 3, 2024 and March 13, 2025, and we need 5-6 volunteers to help families select clothes and sort donations. Please sign up as a volunteer for this fun and valuable role on October 3rd from 9:30am-1:30pm - any amount of time is appreciated! Any questions? Email melissasircy@gmail.com
If your family is interested in accessing this resource twice per school year, please contact Ms. Aud at aumanansala@pps.net or Ms. Blei at jeblei@pps.net.
WALK + ROLL TO SCHOOL DAY - OCT 9
Walk + Roll to School Day is a global event that encourages walking and rolling to school on the same day, October 9th! Arleta supports this event as a way to reduce traffic and pollution, support physical activity and safe routes to school.
The Arleta PTA will have some fun prizes to give away from our favorite neighborhood toy store, Hammer & Jacks! This year's raffle will include a Swell cruiser skateboard, a Badge Brightz star light, and some Pep's reflective stickers for your ride.
Students can come to the front of Arleta before the first bell to claim a prize and enter the raffle!
Grab your walking shoes or wheels of any kind, join friends and participate on October 9th!
GROWN-UP HAPPY HOUR - OCT 9
If you are interested in learning more about the PTA, we invite all grown-ups - parents, caregivers, teachers, and staff - to a happy hour event to meet others and build community. We will highlight the open PTA positions, but mostly will be there to have fun!
Join us on Wednesday, Oct. 9th from 6-7 pm at Smart Donkey Burreria, 3420 SE 50th Ave. This is a no-host event with food and drinks available to purchase. PTA will provide chips and guacamole.
See you there!

UPDATED! ARLETA DOLPHIN DRIVE THROUGH OCT 31
Arleta’s Annual Dolphin Drive “Buy Nothing” Fundraiser is kicking off it's 3rd week. We are asking our community to support the PTA and all it has to offer Arleta by making a donation through our Square site or via check or cash which can be submitted to the front office. We've raised $805 of our $8,000 goal!
This money will be used for teacher grants, free events throughout the year, yearbooks for every student, grounds improvements, and special programs like Oregon Battles of the Books, the spring school play, and the sensorimotor library!
Have your kiddos decorate the dolphin in the Dolphin Drive Letter that came home (or, click here to access it now) and turn into their teacher or the front office. Feel free to decorate as many as you like! Dolphins will be displayed on the waves in the windows outside the office to show our progress towards our $8,000 Dolphin Drive GOAL!
NOMINATE YOUR FAVORITE LIBRARIAN BY SEPT 30
Love your librarian? Of course you do! Ms. Street is the best! Consider nominating her for this year's I Love My Librarian Award and she could receive $5,000 and the recognition of a lifetime. Nominations are due September 30! Learn more here: https://ilovelibraries.org/love-my-librarian/
HALLOWEEN COSTUME SWAP & GREEN TEAM NEEDS A LEAD
In years past our Green Team lead has organized a community costume swap leading up to Halloween. It was an event where students and their grownups could pick costume pieces that were donated by the Arleta community, and the kids seemed to love it. We don't have a Green Team lead this year, so we aren't able to hold costume swap 😢
If you want to support events like this, and sustainability efforts at Arleta, consider volunteering for the Green Team. No experience required, and you'll have lots of help from the PTA. Email ArletaSchoolPTA@gmail.com if you're interested in helping out.
POSITIVE AFFIRMATIONS ON STUDENT MIRRORS
Arleta's SUN Coordinator, in partnership with school administration and BIPOC families, installed wonderfully positive affirmations on student bathroom mirrors throughout the school. Please scroll down towards the bottom of the PTA Uniquely Arleta webpage to take a look. Thank you, Raina!

SUN NEWS & RESOURCES
LEARN ABOUT ARLETA SUN SCHOOL
Arleta SUN Community School provides a FREE after-school program that promotes student success by extending the school day through enrichment activities and academic support. SUN (Schools Uniting Neighborhoods) also provides adult classes & workshops and fun family events. Community schools serve as mini “community centers” by keeping a public building open & active during after-school hours, and bringing youth & family opportunities directly to the neighborhood. It’s an alternative way for you and the local community to connect via the school! SUN is not a childcare program. Portland Parks & Recreation manages the Arleta SUN program.
Our SUN School Coordinator Raina Bilbrew is wonderful as so many of you already know! In addition to coordinating the various aspects of our after school program, she collaborates with and deeply supports our staff, supports students within the school day, serves on Arleta Site Council, runs an intentionally designated SUN Community Space in Room 4, and collaborates with our PTA Inclusion Committee. Ms. Raina and Ms. Sheryl Moren, Inclusion Committee co-chair, host our BIPOC Affinity Space. To contact Raina directly: raina.bilbrew@portlandoregon.gov or 503-916-6332.
Fall term starts Oct. 7.
ARLETA FOOD PANTRY AND CLOTHES CLOSET
Arleta has a small food pantry and clothes closet available for the use of any Arleta family. To set up an appointment to use the pantry or the closet, please email our SUN School Coordinator, Raina Bilbrew at rbilbrew@pps.net or raina.bilbrew@portlandoregon.gov or call or text her at 971-803-8986.
SURVEY FOR COMMUNITY NEEDS
The counselors at Arleta welcome back students and families! The counseling team and SUN would like to invite you to fill out our yearly Community Needs Survey. When you complete the form, all responses are kept confidential and someone from the team will be in touch!
