About Our Department
The Broad Run School Counseling department is a team of 12 dedicated individuals working collaboratively to meet the needs of 1,613 students, including teachers and parents. We have an open-door policy, but at times we are needed in meetings or have scheduled appointments with other students and parents. To serve you more efficiently, we ask that you please call or email us to schedule an appointment.
We support Broad Run High School students by:
- working with staff to address obstacles that interfere with their academic success.
- focusing on skill development through individual and small group counseling, classroom guidance, and coordination with parents, teachers, and administrators.
- helping students strengthen their skills resiliency, conflict resolution, stress management, successful transitions, crisis intervention, suicide prevention, and understanding the needs of all students.
- preparing students with post-high school planning, college visits, internships, scholarships, and job matching.

AP Exam Information
Students, parents, or guardians are responsible for the cost of the AP exam. Each exam is
$85.00, which must be paid by March 1, 2019 in order to appropriately plan for test
administration. If a family needs to arrange for a payment plan or anticipates difficulty in
paying for the exam, the family should speak confidentially with the School Counseling
Director.
An on-line payment portal is available for electronic payments on the LCPS website at: https://osp.osmsinc.com/LoudounVA/BVModules/CategoryTemplates/Detailed%20List%20with%20Properties/Category.aspx?categoryid=DB902
Please ensure that you/your student selects the correct AP exam(s) from the drop-down menu. There is an additional processing fee of 4% for each online transaction. Cash or checks (made payable to Broad Run High School) are also accepted by the Counseling Secretary in the School Counseling Office.
Students must provide their own transportation to school on the day of testing. Please make every effort to schedule vacations, appointments, or other activities on dates that do not conflict with the testing dates. Make-up testing is permitted for verified emergencies only, including a doctor’s note stating that the student is unable to attend school due to a medical issue or illness.
Important Information for Students Attending the Academies of Loudoun:
New this year, Academies of Loudoun students may choose to take AP exam(s) at the
Academies if an exam is offered on days they are scheduled to attend class there. Please review registration and payment instructions that were sent home from the Academies for more information.
Additional information for parents and students can be accessed through the College Board’s
AP Bulletin. If you have further questions about AP exams, please contact your child’s school
counselor.

What is a Gap Year?
A year between completing high school and beginning college when a student steps outside the traditional classroom experience to embrace opportunities for experiential learning. Most programs focus on education, service, and personal growth. Some even offer a monetary stipend towards college! Students often seek a gap year for meaningful learning, adventure, and to make a difference. Parents & students in all grades are welcome. Come check out over 40 programs on February 5th @ 6 pm in the BRHS Auditorium!
