From the Principal, Kim Hunter
Welcome to December at EeLA!
It seems very odd to be saying that as I am sure I just said welcome to November a moment ago. Some times of year just fly by. December can be one of those times as well but it can also be a great time to end the year on a positive note. We have three weeks now and three weeks after winter break until the end of the semester.
For students who are behind in their classes, it can start to feel daunting to finish by the deadline. My best advice is to chunk things out and make a plan that you can stick to. Over the next three weeks, focus on the things that you most need teacher support on. This might be getting to a certain point in math so that you can work over break without needing to take a test. It might mean getting an essay or project done a few days before break so that you can move on to the next essay or project over break. It might just mean connecting with your teacher in a class that is more challenging for you and getting their support so that you can knock out some work over break.
During break, it’s a great time to catch up on your fitness logs, complete an essay or project, or just power through basic assignments. The trick, of course, is that you won’t have access to teachers during this time. If you get stuck, try a Khan Academy video or go back and rewatch some of the videos in Edgenuity.
After the break, it’s time to start finishing things. If you finish classes early, that gives you the opportunity to focus on classes that you need more time to finish. We can’t extend your classes past the end of the semester so getting things to 50% (0.25 credit) or 100% (0.5 credit) is important so that you get as much credit as possible.
With all of that in mind, don’t forget to take a break as well. I’m a big believer in taking the time to reset, refresh, and rejuvenate so that you can come back ready to put in that final push to the end of the semester.
I hope you all enjoy your break and have a happy holiday if this is a time that you celebrate.
~ Principal Kim

The Foundation’s post-secondary scholarship program has opened doors to higher learning for hundreds of graduating seniors and district alumni. Over the past seven years, in partnership with donors, the Foundation has awarded more than $1.1 million in need- and merit-based scholarships to students pursuing vocational, 2- and 4-year certificates or degrees.

Washington Student Achievement Council
In Washington State, it’s easier than ever to access education or training beyond high school. Visit the Washington Student Achievement Council’s Plan Your Future webpage to learn more about the available pathways:
- Open admissions: Washington’s public two-year community and technical colleges offer a variety of opportunities to learn new skills, train for a career, or prepare to transfer to a four-year college. And they’re open access—anyone with a high school diploma or GED can apply and attend. Test scores and GPAs are not considered, although some programs may have additional requirements. Registration is open year-round, so it’s never too late to get started! Learn more about open admissions.
- Guaranteed college admissions: Many public and private four-year colleges guarantee admission to qualified students. Requirements vary but typically include meeting certain high school course requirements and graduating above a specified minimum GPA. Students still need to apply and complete the admissions process. Learn more about guaranteed college admissions.
- Test-optional admissions: Most Washington colleges no longer require applicants to take standardized tests like the SAT or ACT. Some colleges do require an alternative in place of test scores, such as a letter of recommendation or success in certain high school classes. Good scores can have some benefits for those who opt to take the tests. Learn more about test-optional admissions.
Admission requirements and deadlines vary, so always check directly with each college for current info.
College or training after high school means more options and greater security—and financial aid, including the generous WA Grant, can help cover the costs. More families are eligible than ever before. Apply for fall 2025 financial aid as early as December 1, 2024. Create your FSA ID or WASFA account now!

Free and Reduced Meals Applications
We encourage you to fill out the 2024-2025 Free and Reduced Meals Application if you haven't already done so. By completing this application, your family may qualify for fee waivers, but to ensure the fee waiver is applied, you must also consent to share your information by selecting "Consent to Share" on the form.
If you didn't consent when initially filling out the form, you can complete the "Consent to Share" form online, available in Skyward Family Access. This step is crucial, as it enables us to waive fees such as ASB, academic, parking, and graduation fees. Once you submit the consent form, the Food & Nutrition Services Department will review and process it, and applicable fees will be automatically waived the following day.
Thank you for helping us ensure your student receives the benefits they are eligible for!

Weekly Attendance Contact
Our goal at Edmonds eLearning Academy is to partner with families to ensure that students are meeting their attendance requirements. One of the most powerful ways to prepare a student for success in life is through regular school attendance.
How do we take attendance at EeLA?
Attendance is monitored through weekly contact. Our weeks start on Sunday and end Saturday at midnight. To be marked present, students are required to make two-way academic contact with at least one teacher, one time per week. Academic progress in classes is not the same as weekly contact, and parent/guardian contact does not count towards weekly contact.
Examples of weekly contact include but are not limited to:
A student discussing feedback with their teacher to improve a writing assignment or a student meeting with their teacher in a Zoom session to gain a greater understanding of mathematical concepts.
A student messaging their teachers through Edgenuity to discuss their goals for the week in their EeLA class(es).
A student/teacher phone call to check in about progress, goals, or any questions the student has.
If a student has valid justification for missing weekly contact, as defined by the Edmonds School Board, a guardian must contact the attendance office within two school days, and provide valid justification and documentation to excuse the missed contact. The attendance office phone number is 425-431-3908. Alternatively, guardians can complete the Absence Excuse Form.
Attendance is a mandatory requirement and must be fulfilled as part of your student’s enrollment at EeLA. Consequences for missed weekly contact without valid justification are as follows:
One week of missed contact - Student and guardian are notified of an unexcused absence by email address on file.
Two consecutive or three cumulative weeks - A mandatory student and parent conference will be scheduled by email. The student’s needs will be evaluated and a written improvement plan will be established.
Four cumulative missed contacts: A letter will be mailed home informing parents/guardians that the student is at-risk of a truancy referral.
Five consecutive or six cumulative weeks - EeLA is required to refer the student and parent for truancy as stated in WAC 392-550-040.

Terence Thomas (Science Teacher)
Howdy, my name is Terence Thomas. I teach Science, History, and a few different electives at EeLA. I grew up in various rural small towns across southern Idaho and Oregon. In those small towns, my mom was the high school librarian, and my dad was the high school History/PE/Weights teacher and head football coach. Most of my time as a kid was spent riding bikes, fishing, hunting, swimming, and hanging out around the weight room and football practice with my dad. As I got older I started getting recruited to play D1 football as an offensive tackle. I never liked practicing in 100 F+ weather, and I like trees, so UW is where I landed. While at UW I played football as a right offensive tackle, had a few injuries, and finished out my undergrad with a degree in Environmental Science and Resource Management with a focus on Wildlife Conservation. I was vice president of WSAAC, Washington Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, and I also earned an environmental stewardship award for managing the recycling of thousands of tennis balls from the UW tennis team that went on to be used at Fort Lewis to help train special forces dogs (mainly German Sheppards). I received my Masters in Teaching Science from WGU and immediately joined Edmonds eLearning Academy after finishing my graduate degree. This is my 7th year with EeLA.
Tony Marzano (Special Education Teacher)
