The Weekly Update #4
August 27th, 2024
Principal's Message
Last week we welcomed our new assistant principal, Mrs. Matilda Scott. It has been several years since Williams has had an assistant principal so we are thankful for the extra position. Mrs. Scott will be at our school 50% of her schedule and 50% at another elementary school. The easiest way to reach her will be matilda.scott@nhcs.net.
Another exciting update is our covered walkways are being painted! It is making such a difference in the appearance of our school and a priority I've been working on for a long time. So far the front section of the walkway has been completed and our Maintenance Department is working hard to complete the rest. If you happen to be on campus and see one of our Maintenance Department staff working on this huge project, please share our appreciation for their hard work.
Last Friday, some of our students participated in Special Olympics at Legion Stadium. Our students had the opportunity to participate in several station rotations to practice a variety of sports such as soccer skills, bocce, obstacle courses, football throw, dancing, and more!
This week our third through fifth graders will be taking the ELA CheckIn on Thursday. This is a classroom assessment, created by our NC Department of Public Instruction, to assess the English Language Arts standards that have been taught so far this year. It is a similar format to the End of Grade test which will be good for the students to show what they have learned.
On Friday, October 25th, we will have our Fall Festival from 5:30-7:30 pm. Thank you to our PTA for planning this event. We hope that you will make this a family event Friday night to enjoy games, pizza, candy and music. Students may dress up in costumes. Raffle tickets will be available for purchase as a PTA fundraiser.
If your child is a car rider in the afternoon, I'd ask that you keep the name card visible on your dashboard through the whole carline process. We know that our wonderful Mrs. Billingsley, who calls the names on the walkie, has memorized many of you but we want to help our other staff, who are opening car doors, also are learning names and checking that those who are picking up students have their car tags. Thank you for keeping those car tags visible as an extra level of safety for all.
BOY Paperwork
Shout Out to all parents that have been sending in the paperwork that was sent home to those families that did not complete the renewal application in scribbles. We use these to update phone numbers and addresses, and FERPA rights. When adding Emergency contacts we must have a first and last name., we can't add a contact with only a first name If your address is different than it was last school year, please send in a new proof of residence. Thank you!

Would you like to represent our school on a Parent & Family Engagement Committee?
We have been asked to get 1-3 parents to represent Williams Elementary on a New Hanover County Schools committee and we would love to have YOU! This council will provide important input on Parent & Family Engagement policies and outreach, identifying areas of need in the district, and how we should use our federal funding to support those needs. The committee will meet 1 time per month from 9:00-10:30 at the Board of Education Center. The first meeting will be held on September 27th. The other meeting dates are: Oct. 25, Nov. 22, Jan.24, Feb.28, Mar.28, Apr.25 and May 30. If you are interested or would like more information, please email Mrs. Lennon, principal at janna.lennon@nhcs.net.
Student Support Services
The 2024-2025 NHCS Student Handbook on Code of Conduct, Discipline, & Annual Notifications is published and available under the quick links on the NHCS website. Although it is linked in the Beginning of Year Application through Scribbles, please be sure to highlight the Student Code of Conduct and Annual Notifications with your families.
