Welcome Romig 24/25
July 29th, 2024
We look forward to seeing you!
Romig and ASD have been busy getting our school ready to see you on August 15th and 16th. Because we are still doing some renovations, we do not anticipate the building being open to families until the first day of school. There are renovations happening in the office, locker rooms, carpeted classrooms, and the addition of the four relocatables.

Anchorage School District FIRST DAY 2024
ASD is staggering the first day of school in August 2024 to support students in a new school environment - sixth-graders in middle school and ninth-graders in the Freshman Academy. All neighborhood and comprehensive schools will follow the staggered first day schedule. Classes will begin at the new school start times, which is 9:30 a.m. for middle school and 8:45 a.m. for high school.
By providing students in grades 6-7 a day at school with smaller student populations, schools can prioritize onboarding activities and support.
This will include:
- Assisting students with locker and classroom navigation
- Chromebook distrobution
- Team building activities
- Discussions on successful academic practices and clear behavior expectations
- Additional activities appropriate to grade level
- School tours
Due to the staggered start date, where all school staff will be on hand to support students, there is no Romig Camp before school starts on August 15th.

NOTE: It is a policy that you DO NOT share or give your combination out to any other students or friends once you receive it at the beginning of the school year. This is very important for keeping your valuables safe.
You are responsible for everything in your locker.
Cell Phone Policy - Off and Away All Day
The team at Romig Middle School has studied a review of information that reveals the negative emotional and academic impact of cell phone presence during academic instruction. As a result, we have slightly revised our 2024/2025 student cell phone policy. Students will be required to turn off and lock cell phones away in their lockers from 9:30-4:00. Our team is committed to providing a school culture that is focused on educating our students, and it is clear that cell phones/devices are an ever-present distraction from that goal. Linked are some of the articles and research that have persuaded our team Please review and discuss with your student.
We know that many of our returning 8th graders will have feelings about the change in the cell phone policy. In reality, this is not a change. Phones have always been expected to be Put Up and away during the school day. However, research shows that even having a phone in a backpack, purse, or pocket limits potential learning and leads to distractions. Please support our team as we strive to provide the very best academic and social experience for your students.
Remember, OFF & AWAY during the school day!

Frequently Asked Questions
1. “What if I need to get in contact with my child during the school day?”
While it is certainly convenient and reassuring to text your student during the day, the cost of having immediate access is not worth the interruptions during the school day. If you must contact your child during their educational day please call the front office and we will gladly send them a message in between classes.
2. “What if there is a safety issue such as an Active Shooter situation or natural disaster, isn’t my child safer with a cell phone?”
No. Safety experts across the country report that during such a situation, it is crucial for students to pay full attention to the present adult and not be distracted by texting friends or family. Notifications sounding and breaking the silence and concentration during such an event places a student at more risk, not less.
3. What if my student needs to contact me?
There are phones in the classroom for emergencies and phones in the office.
4. What if my student needs a phone for a school project?
School-issued Chromebooks are capable of meeting the technology needs of students, and unlike their phones, they are monitored by our gaggle system for inappropriate content, signs of harassment, or self-harm.
