Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month

May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month (AAPI Heritage Month). This month is an annual celebration that recognizes the historical and cultural contributions of individuals and groups of Asian and Pacific Islander descent to the United States.

Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month began as a week-long celebration in the late 1970s and later extended into a month-long celebration in 1990. The month of May was chosen in honor of the first Japanese immigrants who came to the United States and the completion of the transcontinental railroad, which both occurred during May.

Today, AAPI communities speak over 100 languages in over 50 ethnic groups throughout the U.S., with ties tracing back to Chinese, Indian, Japanese, Filipino, Vietnamese, Korean, Hawaiian and other Asian and Pacific Islander ancestries.

Throughout this month, students will have an opportunity to learn about and celebrate the contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders to our nation and community.

In order to learn more about family experiences within Brighton, we are asking for your feedback via an online survey about school perceptions, engagement, and school environment. The survey data is collected by individual school buildings. Families can choose to take the survey multiple times for different school buildings or complete one survey for your oldest child in district.

All survey responses are confidential. No one within our district will see how you individually respond to the questions. A separate organization, Thought Exchange, will manage all data collection to ensure confidentiality.

The survey will take approximately 15 minutes to complete and will be an invaluable source of information for us as we work to make our school community as excellent as it can be. This summer, Building School Based Equity Teams and the District Leadership team will be reviewing the data to support building and district plans and goals for the 2024-2025 school year.

BRIGHTON CLEAN SWEEP 2024

The Annual Brighton Clean Sweep and BHS Spring Clean Up Day is set for Saturday, May 11th.

I encourage all of you to consider helping out with this event.

Please sign up in the Main Office by May 8th if you would like to help in some capacity. Maybe your club, athletic team, group of friends, or just you!

WHAT WILL SPRING CLEAN UP DAY LOOK LIKE?

- School Staff will be grouped with student volunteers and be given an area of the school community to clean, pick up trash, etc.

- All constituent groups meet at BHS at 9:00 A.M. for cleanup assignments, directions, and BREAKFAST!

- All groups go to their mapped-out areas to clean from 9:30 A.M. – 11:15 A.M. We will do the entire BHS and TCMS grounds and Buckland Creek areas.

- At the end of the clean-up, students and staff may go to FRES for lunch!

Are you interested in learning about a different culture and way of life? For more than 30 years, Brighton has been the only district in our area to host language interns from other countries! The World Language Department at Brighton is currently looking for three host families for our interns for the 2024-25 academic school year, and we hope you will consider!

Brighton High School is once again excited to participate in the BHS-Israeli Exchange. Even though the program is jointly sponsored by the Brighton Central School District and the Jewish Federation of Rochester, this is intended to be a strictly cultural and non-religious exchange. As such, any BHS student can participate.

The Transportation Department asks that guardians have their students out at their bus stop five to seven minutes before the assigned stop time. We have many sub drivers daily. Sub drivers will not know the routes as well as the normal driver and may be a few minutes early or late for the assigned stop time. Being at the stop early is the best way to make sure that kids will not miss the bus. Hopefully, the return of warmer weather will make getting outside easier. If the bus is running more than 10 minutes late for pick up, please call the Transportation Department at: 242-5200, ext 5806.

There will be no Boot Camp in April. The final Boot Camp of the school year meets Saturday, May 11 from 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Complete information about the class content and registration is available here.

High School Study Skills offers tips and suggestions on useful study skills for high school students. These skills include time management, material organization, learning methods, active listening, and active reading skills - all skills students need to succeed in high school. Students who have enrolled in the class in previous years have attested to its value. The class is open to students in grades 9 - 12. You do not have to be a Brighton High School student to register.

SAT and ACT Exam Prep Boot Camp

Taught by Chariot Learning--Upstate New York’s most well-known and respected test prep organization--this SAT/ACT Boot Camp thoroughly reviews the essential reading, writing, math, and test-taking skills and strategies for the most current versions of both exams. This class meets at Brighton High School multiple times throughout the year.Complete class information, meeting dates for each session, and registration are available at brightonschools.revtrak.net. New York State Driver Education

This course is offered at Brighton High School (BHS four times a year – fall, winter, spring, and summer. Brighton Central School District partners with a program coordinator and instructors who are Monroe One Educational Services (BOCES) employees. Dates for the next session are posted as soon as they are provided to BHS from BOCES. BHS students are enrolled on a first-come, first-served basis. Prepare to register for this course by reading general information about the current session here (see the Student Info Sheet). • No loitering or hanging out in bathrooms. If students are waiting for available stalls or urinals, they should wait in the hallway or choose another bathroom.
• Bathrooms are for urinating, defecating, and attending to personal hygiene issues. They are not for eating, socializing, or vaping. Students have a right to privacy when using the restroom and should not have to navigate through students vaping or hanging out.
• Students should get in and get out. Period.

• Nicotine Vape use/possession will result in Saturday detentions, ISS, and treatment programs for nicotine addiction.

• THC containing vapes use/possession will result in out of school suspension and treatment program referrals for substance use/abuse.

• Selling of vape devices/drugs will result in long-term suspension.

We have stepped up our cleaning schedule throughout the day and have increased security monitoring of all bathrooms at BHS. We have heard you and we need your help to make all of our bathrooms clean, safe, and welcoming.
