Brookview Families,

Here are key updates for this week:

• Readers and Leaders! Classroom teachers are signing students up for the BOOKIT program. BOOK IT! motivates children to read by rewarding their reading accomplishments with praise, recognition and pizza. The program is simple, flexible, fun and free to use in your classroom! BOOK IT! was created in 1984 and currently reaches more than 14 million students and 37,000 K-6 grade schools annually.

• One of our key learning targets this year will be Reading Foundations. This target will involved students in all grades. Reading Foundations will help students develop an understanding of the five components of reading (print concepts, phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, and fluency and comprehension) to build foundational reading skills.

Be sure to ask you child's teacher about - DECODING / BLENDING / RHYMING

• Warren will host another webinar on Tuesday. Dr. Virginia Caine will be the special panelist. This webinar will be for both staff and community.

Warren students should be ready to change the world when they graduate and they will need the following six skills: Communication, Collaboration, Content Knowledge, Critical Thinking, Citizenship, and Resilience. Stay tuned for more information on these skills and dispositions.

A common supply list for all students in grades K-4 can be found here:

School Supply List - this year to increase consistency and help with communication, a universal K-4 school supply list was created. Any items not on the list that are needed can be discussed with me (we will try to purchase at the building what is appropriate but will not ask parents for more than this.) All students in grades K-4 in a Warren Twp elementary will be asked the bring the following:

• 1 bottle of white, liquid glue

• 2 large, pink erasers

• 2 big glue sticks or 4 small glue sticks

• 1 box of tissue

• 2 boxes of crayons

• 1 box of markers or colored pencils

• 24, #2 pencils

• 4 black dry-erase markers

• 1 pair of safety scissors

• 1 small school box or zipper pouch for school supplies

• 2,two-pocket folders

• 2 wide-ruled notebooks

• 1 ruler (inches and centimeters)

• 2 highlighters

• 1 pack of 3x5 index cards (white)

• A backpack (no wheels)

• 1 pair of headphones

We have made a slight change to the car rider procedure for this year. For both Pick up and Drop off, the car rider line will utilize two lanes to reduce congestion. See map below for details.

Teaching and Learning Emphasis

At Brookview Elementary, we want our students to be strong readers! There are 5 major components to reading. I will be sharing information on each of the 5 components of reading over the next several weeks. Let's start with fluency.

What Is Fluency?

Fluency is the ability to read "like you speak." Hudson, Lane, and Pullen define fluency this way: "Reading fluency is made up of at least three key elements: accurate reading of connected text at a conversational rate with appropriate prosody or expression." Non-fluent readers suffer in at least one of these aspects of reading: they make many mistakes, they read slowly, or they don't read with appropriate expression and phrasing.

Many researchers have found that fluency is highly correlated with reading comprehension—that is, when a student reads fluently, that student is likely to comprehend what he or she is reading.

So how do we teach it?

Teacher Modeling

Examples of teacher modeling include:

• Teacher-assisted reading
• Peer-assisted reading
• Audio-assisted reading

Key point: Teacher modeling involves more than just listening to someone else read. Students must be actively involved 100 percent of the time and in a multi-sensory way.

Parents, you play a major role here as well. Allowing your children consistent opportunities to read to you is key. Every night, have your children read to you. This helps your child become a strong reader!

MSD of Warren Township has created a comprehensive strategic plan based on community input that will ensure all students and staff have the conditions necessary to develop and apply Journey of a Graduate (JoG) skills and dispositions. The Journey of a Graduate skills are a set of 6 skills and dispositions that have been identified by our community needed for success in and out of school. The JoG skills are Critical Thinking, Citizenship, Communication, Collaboration, Content Knowledge, and Resilience. These JoG skills will serve as the foundation of the district strategic plan.

Warren Township School District has a new app and website! The purpose of the app and website is to provide regular updates through the live feed, district news, and

district events sections as well as other important district information. The app includes easy access to the weekly breakfast and lunch menu, staff contacts, district documents, bullying and safety reporting form, and much much more. SCHOOL DISTRICT PUBLICATIONS/NEWS MEDIA USE

The occasion may arise when the school district wants to recognize your child or your child's school. This may include your child's photo, your child's name or your child's work in district publications, newsletters, on school district websites, and in electronic/social media or in staff training videos. We may also want to tell the media (including newspapers, television, and radio) about your child's achievements. We never knowingly release information about a student to anyone who wants to use it for commercial/political purposes. However, we will honor your request to not include your child in these types of recognitions if you notify Mr. Coleman by email that you do not want this type of information released.
