What is our magnet theme?

Medical science is the scientific study of the maintenance of health and treatment of disease. Areas of concentration include pharmaceutical science, veterinary medicine, agricultural sciences, bioterrorism, and much more. Global health is the scientific study of health in global population context. It is defined as the areas of study, research, and practice that place a priority on improving health and achieving equity in health for all people worldwide. Global health initiatives are often tied to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the innovative strategies required to meet the SDGs.

How is the magnet theme experienced at your school?

Students interested in a career in health and/or science professions will be interested in this new magnet theme. The magnet theme is present in every classroom. There is also opportunity to join the Health Science Academy and/ or the STEM academy. Community partnerships will offer hands-on learning opportunities for all students. Our enthusiasm for the magnet theme is palpable. We utilize project-based learning to offer relevant, dynamic curriculum for all students.

How do we apply?

The magnet school application period is open until January 30, 2020. For more information, visit the WCPSS Magnet Application Process page online at http://www.wcpss.net/Page/189 Application status notifications will occur mid February.

Need to enroll?

Charter, private school folks will need to enroll in WCPSS. Pre-registration. This is the link to the enrollment packet. Registration for 2020- 2021 school year will open in January.

Magnet, base, academy?

It can be very confusing to navigate the application process. Here are the basics:

If Athens Drive Magnet High School is your base, you do nothing in January. You do not need to do the magnet application process. You are already a magnet student!
If Athens Drive Magnet High School is NOT your base, you will need to do the magnet application in January. Choose only the schools you wish to attend. Do NOT fill in every alternate spot unless you are sure you would want to attend that school.
Notifications for magnet applications will occur in February.
If in February you are scheduled to attend our school (base or magnet application) and you want to attend an academy, you MUST complete the online academy application. The academy application will be on the school website and tentatively open from February 19- March 2. Don't miss the deadline!

Do I have to join an academy?

Absolutely not! If you are particularly interested in STEM or Health Science careers, an academy might be a great choice for you. However, the magnet theme is experienced in every single classroom, not just in academy courses! We have a wonderful comprehensive education available for all students.

STEM ACADEMY INFORMATION

If I am assigned to Athens Drive Magnet High School, will I automatically be added into the Health Sciences or STEM academy?

No. The magnet theme of medical sciences and global health initiatives is in every classroom. Joining an academy, band, athletics, and other groups are separate to our magnet theme. Once you are accepted into Athens Drive Magnet High School, you will need to apply online to join either academy. The application process window is very narrow, so please be sure to check online as soon as you find out the status of your magnet application! Is transportation provided?

ADHS offers express bus services for some magnet students. Check http://wwwgis2.wcpss.net/addressLookup/ to find out if transportation is provided for your student. Shortly after a student’s magnet application is approved, WCPSS transportation will send an email with instructions. You can find more information here: http://www.wcpss.net/transportation

What is the school schedule?

Our school day is from 7:25 am- 2:18 pm on a traditional calendar. Students will have block scheduling, with four 90 minutes class periods per semester.
