ROML Placement Exams
SPAN, FREN, ITAL, and PORT Fall 2024
Why should you take a language placement exam EVEN if you have AP credit coming?
2024 AP credit will not be released and in Athena until July 20th. That means if you have a registration session before then you you will have to wait until July 20th to register for those courses which require that credit as a prerequisite.* To avoid having to wait for scores to get to UGA to register, take a placement exam to get scores right away.
* Some departments (like ROML) will allow you to send them a screen shot of your AP score along with you 81# and they will give you a prerequisite override for the next course (see details below).
Placement exams cannot hurt you in any way. UGA takes the highest placement.
I took Spanish or French in high school but I didn't get AP or IB credit. Should I take a placement exam?
You should take the placement exam.
Do you want to major or minor in Spanish or French?
You should take the placement exam.
Does your College/Major require that you show proficiency to a certain level in a foreign language?
You should take the placement exam.
Did you take more than 3 or more semesters of Spanish or French in high school?
You should take the placement exam.
*If you took Spanish or French in high school and it has been a while or you feel like you didn't learn enough to justify taking a placement exam, register for SPAN or FREN 1110.*
These courses combine 1001 and 1002 together in one semester. The cover everything from the beginning but they go quickly. So, if you college/major requires you to take through the 3rd level of a foreign language (2001), taking one of these 1110 courses allows you to get through that third level with just two courses (1110 and then 2001).
Placement Exams
- FREN and SPAN placement exams are given via ELC Respondus Monitor. If you want to take a Spanish, French, or Hebrew placement test, please reach out to Testing Services as soon as possible, at least a week before your orientation session, to schedule placement testing. The Italian placement exam is offered in-person at University Testing Services. Email rladv@uga.edu if you would like to take the Portuguese placement exam.
- Language Placement FAQS: There are no study guides for these language exams. They take about 1 hour. The cost is $30. You may take them only once. Students who in high school took a semester or more of Spanish should not register for SPAN 1001. SPAN 1001 is for beginners only. These students with some background should register for SPAN 1110 which combines SPAN 1001 and 1002 in one semester. This rule also applies to French. Any credit acquired by a department language placement exam cannot count in Area IV World Language and Culture.
