80% of Success is Attendance
Children who are chronically absent during kindergarten show lower levels of achievement in math and reading by the time they reach first grade.
If absences continue throughout your child’s school career, his/her chances of success are decreasing every year that passes. Consequences can include:
- Failing grades
- Low standardized test scores
- Dropping out of school
- Difficulty finding a good job, getting into college and maintaining a steady income
- Drug and alcohol abuse
- Incarceration
The effects of missing school can impact all kids, no matter who they are or where they live. It can even affect students who attend school regularly because it slows down the progress of an entire class.

Dangerous snails? Yes, yes they can be...

The Drought
One day there was this little town right outside of El Paso. It was going through a huge drought. Barely any water to drink, shower or even wash our clothes in. Everyone was kind of, well, smelly. The sun was just a heat lamp burning down on my little town. It seemed like the never ending light. There were no ponds, lakes, or beaches with water. Til one day I was going to find water for my little town. It was desert after desert. Sand as far as the eye could see. Before I set off I bought the last sunblock on the shelf. I covered myself with it and put on a hat that covered my face. Then I was on my way.
I walked and walked and walked till I could barely feel my legs. I finally came to a long wall covered in leaves except a little door. I didn't even care that I didn't know what was inside the door. I opened it up and walked in. It was ponds, lakes, water bottle towers, and sunscreen. I chugged some water and recharged on sunscreen. Then I ran out all the way to town to tell everyone, but everyone was gone. Not a person in sight.
"Hello, anyone? Mom, Dad?", I yelled. Then I found a note on the floor that said "Out to find water, just like you. We started going east, the opposite of you." I ran east to find everyone, yelling "I found water!" Then I saw the whole town running, following me to the water. When they arrived everyone was jumping in the water, and the drinking bottles too.
We lived there for the rest of our lives. The end.
