Superintendent's Newsletter

Harlandale Legacy,
March is in full swing, and with it comes a well-deserved break for our district. While this time offers a chance to rest and recharge, our commitment to our students and community remains constant. I hope this break allows everyone to return feeling refreshed and ready for the weeks ahead.
River Parade Art Contest
I want to start this week’s newsletter by celebrating two talented Adams Elementary students for being recognized in the River Parade Art Contest! Mia Perez was named the City Council District 3 runner-up, and Yazmin Padierna was selected as a finalist. Both students will receive a check benefiting their campus’ art program. Yazmin will also be featured in this year’s Texas Cavaliers River Parade Program and will be recognized during the official Cavaliers Press Conference at the San Antonio Museum of Art at the end of the month. Congratulations to Mia and Yazmin! We’re incredibly proud of you both and the way you’re representing Harlandale ISD on a citywide stage!
¡SÍ, SE PUEDE! Student Art Contest
Continuing to showcase the incredible creativity of our students, I am excited to recognize Terrell Wells Middle School student Analysa Garcia, whose artwork has been selected for the ¡SÍ, SE PUEDE! Student Art Inspired by Dolores Huerta exhibition. Her piece will be featured alongside works from 17 students representing eight schools across Bexar County in this special exhibit at MACRI, running from March 3 to April 19. Way to go, Analysa!
100th Career Goal
I’d like to give McCollum High School senior Alita Uresti a special shoutout for reaching an incredible milestone—scoring her 100th career goal! Her dedication, skill and hard work on and off the field are a testament to her determination and drive, and she continues to make the Harlandale Legacy proud. Congratulations, Alita!
2024-2025 Teachers of the Year
Join me in celebrating our 2024-2025 Campus Teachers of the Year, a group of outstanding educators who go above and beyond to inspire and support our students every day. A special congratulations to Mr. Alexander Olivarez from Harlandale High School, who was not only named Harlandale ISD District Teacher of the Year but was also surprised with a $2,000 check and the EXCEL Award from Credit Human and KENS 5! His impact extends beyond the classroom, and we are grateful for his leadership and dedication. Be sure to watch his full story on April 15 on KENS 5 to see why he is so deserving of this honor. Congratulations to all of our incredible educators, and thank you for everything you do for our Harlandale Legacy!
Wrapping Up
As we wrap up this week’s newsletter, I want to thank you for your continued support. It’s an honor to be part of such a dedicated community that works together to provide the best for our students. I hope you enjoy a safe and well-deserved Spring Break. Take this time to recharge, spend time with loved ones and do what brings you joy. I look forward to seeing you all when we return!
Sincerely,
Gerardo Soto
