Thanksgiving is around the corner. We wish everyone much needed time to relax and recharge with loved ones next week. When we return from Thanksgiving, there are a little over 3 weeks left of the semester. Time is quickly passing by. Please continue to communicate with teachers, counselors, and administrators if you have concerns or questions. It takes a village and we're here to support all of our kids together.
Campus Closed for Thanksgiving Week: School is off and the main office will be closed throughout the week of 11/21-25. Happy Thanksgiving!
COVID Test Kits: Students will receive 2 test kits to take home on Thursday, 11/17, during Flex period. Please work with your student to complete one test kit on Sunday, 11/27, before returning to school. The 2nd kit is there in case your student has a positive result, to retest based on the timeline in the student flowchart. Students absent on Thursday can pick up their test kits from the Main Office on Friday, 11/18. Our office is open 8-4 pm.
Boys Basketball Home Game: Our second home game will be against Walters on Thursday, 11/17. Students - wear your green or Hopkins gear to support your peers.
After-school Art Workshop: Students attending the art workshop on Thursday, 11/17, have received confirmation emails that were also sent to their parents/guardians. We still have space available for the workshops on 12/1 and 12/8. To register your student's interest, please complete this survey: https://forms.gle/8NzHvmMvk641D71SA
Hopkins is a Safe Space from Hate: And we need your help in strengthening our community of cultural and racial appreciations. Despite what students may see on TikTok and what they may hear in popular music, N-word and its alternatives are not acceptable. Students who choose harmful language will face discipline. This article has some helpful guidance for conversations with kids at home about slurs, racism, and the impact of language.

We had another busy week at the Hawk Nation. Students and staff enjoyed dressing up for Halloween and watching Advanced Orchestra's lunchtime concert. On Dia de los Muertos, our Spanish Immersion Program teacher Ms. Manjabosco, students, and family volunteers coordinated engaging learning activities for the whole school during lunch. We are also thankful for Parent Faculty Association (PFA)'s catered dinner for our staff on Wednesday for parent-teacher conferences, as well as their donation of $15,000 towards Chromebook purchases, approved by the PFA Board during Thursday's meeting. Please enjoy some photos below of this week's festivities.
Hope Garden Donations: We are still seeking donations of succulents, soil, and sand. Please drop off at our Main Office Monday through Friday, 8-4 PM. We will begin planning once we receive enough materials.
PFA Donations: When families donate to the PFA, donations can help fund school-wide improvement efforts. This year our focus is on technology updates (Chromebooks) and 21st century modular classroom seating that improves student collaboration and attention/focus. PFA donations are different from donating directly towards a specific department or the ASB; department-specific donations will be used by teachers towards funding materials needed for that specific department/program.
Thank you for considering giving any amount that you can towards PFA to help us update technology and classroom seating. Find out more at: http://www.hopkinspfa.org
Lunchtime Intramural Sports: Starting this week, Ms. Fern and Mr. Smith run basketball tournaments between multiple teams in the gym Monday through Thursday. Students can cheer on their friends in the audience stands. Ms. Ha facilitates a yoga session on Fridays. These lunchtime events provide important outlets to support our students' social-emotional well-being.
Lockdown Drill: As part of our commitment to safety and security preparedness, on Tuesday, 11/8, we will be conducting a lockdown drill. 5th period teachers have discussed procedures with students so they know what to do in response to an intruder alert. If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to assistant principal Mrs. Moore (jmoore@fusdk12.net) or me (nkuei@fusdk12.net).
Coffee with Counselors: Come chat with our counselors on Wednesday, 11/9, 8:30-9:30 AM, in the library. They will go over different types of support provided by the counseling department, and there is time for Questions and Answers. Please see the flyer here.
Boys Basketball Home Game: Thursday, 11/10, is our first home game for our boys basketball team. Remember to wear Hopkins or green clothing to support our student athletes. Students and families are welcome to come support our 7th and 8th grade teams. Gym space is limited. Thank you for understanding that we may need to turn people away when we reach capacity.
After-school Art Workshops: An art educator from San Jose Art Museum will be facilitating a Thursday art workshop free of cost to Hopkins students, starting Thursday, 11/10. There is still plenty of space in the workshops on 11/17, 12/1, and 12/8. To register your interest, fill out the survey here. Students and guardians with confirmed spots for the 11/10 workshop will receive an email on Monday, 11/7.
Veterans Day: No School on Friday, 11/11, in observance of Veterans Day, honoring those who have served and sacrificed for our country.
Traffic Safety: Please remind students that crossing the street at the traffic signals on Amapola Drive by the Main Office is much safer than the crosswalk towards Chiltern Drive where unfortunately we have been seeing reckless drivers who do not stop for pedestrians. If students need to cross the street on Driscoll Road, please encourage them to cross at Amapola Drive where we have staff and traffic signals actively monitoring their safety. For students who choose to use the crosswalk closer to Chiltern Drive, please remember to press the button to activate the blinking lights.
Have a safe and relaxing weekend,
