Core Classroom Updates
English Language Arts
Our study of the short story “Rogue Wave” culminated in a plot diagram and a selection test. In addition, we discussed how to tame the run-on sentence. Next week brings our Book Fair walk through. This will give the students a chance to create their Wish Lists before shopping on October 15th. In the classroom, we will explore some informational text with the selection “Women in Aviation”. This piece allows us to focus on author’s purpose and citing text evidence.

ESL
Students will continue with writing essays this week. The focus will be on writing an introduction paragraph with a thesis sentence and the sentence that gets the reader's attention.

Math
7th grade math students are wrapping up their module of instruction on operations with rational numbers. We've learned to solve problems that involve adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing positive and negative fractions, decimals, and mixed numbers. We reviewed on Thursday and Friday, and the kids with take the module 4 test on Monday, 7 October. Any missing assignments are due no later than the day of the module test. Have a great weekend.

This week in Science, we learned about how plants and animals use cellular respiration to get energy from the food that they eat or create themselves. Next week we will have a unit review and quiz before starting unit 2, Human Body Systems.

Social Studies
Students have been studying People and the Environment this week! Next week, students will wrap up their People and the Environment unit and begin studying Culture and Society! Students test over People, and the Environment is Tuesday, October 8th! Have a wonderful weekend!

Elective Class Updates
Art
6th grade artists put finishing touches on their Crazy Hair Day projects, worked on optical illusion designs, and are ready for a new project next week. 7th, 8th and 9th grade artists have been researching, designing and building clay masks this week. These masks range in theme from protective to terrifying.

In Lesson 1.9 Design Challenge students will:
Follow a design process to effectively develop a design solution.
Use a decision matrix to evaluate potential solutions.
Demonstrate successful collaboration within a team to meet design requirements.
Explore careers in automation and robotics.
Present their build for the design challenge.

7th Grade AVID continued working on our college/career readiness unit with creating a college pennant and choosing activities from a choice board.
Next week we'll start a joint unit with ELA and have another grade and binder check.

This young group of thespians spent the week polishing their Reader’s Theater scripts. The plan is for them to perform for the 7th grade later this month. Next week, we will begin reading scripts for their small ensembles presentations.

Energy and the Environment
Students have identified their projects to build for the Energy Expo. They will present their work in class on 10/10.

Magic of Electrons
Students will learn the transistor is an important electronic device because it allows a small amount of current to control a larger amount of current and then they will design a circuit that uses a transistor as a switch. There will be a test Review over Lesson 2 Electronics on Wednesday, October 9th and a test on Thursday, October 10th.

Medical Detectives
This week in Medical Detectives we have been studying the parts of a neuron and how a signal passes from one neuron to another. Check out the pictures of a neuron model made with craft supplies! Next we will be looking at common neurological disorders. Have a super weekend!

Physical Education
All is well in PE! Mr. Amon/Mrs. Dreiling’s classes have finished our football unit. Mr. Turner’s classes have finished frisbee. This next week, we will begin fitness testing. All students will test in the mile run, push-ups, sit-ups, sit and reach, and vertical. Students in Sports Conditioning will be fitness testing as well. Feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns you may have for your student!
*We will look to go outside as much as possible for PE (weather permitting). Please help us in reminding our students to bring water bottles and tennis shoes every day they have PE.

We are finishing first quarter with our Hispanic Heritage Month presentations, the final part of the Guapo Trilogy, and continuing to learn basics of the Spanish language.
