Dear Friends
May 16, 2023
Mental health awareness and Panorama survey
Since 1949, May has been recognized as Mental Health Awareness Month. While the month did have its share of commercials, social media posts, and events, the topic of mental health remains one which is often left in silence due to a myriad of reasons. Some reasons include stigma of shame, lack of awareness and understanding, or at times unresolved traumas.
Unfortunately, mental health grabs our attention when it physically manifests through actions which frequently involve pain or loss. Proactive measures include some seemingly small steps such as building positive relationships, checking in on people, speaking up when or if help is needed, and creating space to engage in conversations around mental, social, and emotional health.
As we wrap up the school year, we are asking students to again participate in the Panorama survey for social-emotional learning. For elementary grades 3-5, the questions center on their current knowledge, how they feel about the school environment, and whether they have access to staff and resources to feel safe and successful. For secondary grades, the questions center on the same areas and further explores whether students feel they have the skills, opportunity, or ability for personal and academic growth. The survey will be available from June 1 to June 20.
Our goal as a district and community is to ensure that each student feels safe, welcomed, and supported in our schools and while attending school activities. The information provided through this survey is one tool we can use to hear student voice and perspective. Other considerations will continue to include conversations with students, families, and staff and monitoring of academic progress and social-emotional awareness.
It is ok to not feel ok, but please know that there is help and support so that it does not have to remain that way.

Be careful what you wish for, as Stephen Sondheim’s and James Lapine’s cockeyed fairytale comes to life in this adaptation of their groundbreaking, Tony Award-winning musical. Come see the musical Into the Woods Jr. presented by theatre students at Snohomish High School (1316 Fifth Street in Snohomish).

Into the Woods Jr. features all of your favorite characters - Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack (and his beanstalk) and the Witch - in this lyrically rich retelling of classic Brothers Grimm fables. The musical centers on a baker and his wife, who wish to have a child; Cinderella, who wishes to attend the King's festival; and Jack, who wishes his cow would give milk. When the baker and his wife learn that they cannot have a child because of a witch's curse, the two set off on a journey to break the curse, and wind up changed forever.

Be safe around water
May is National Water Safety Month. Safety is a core value at our Snohomish Aquatic Center, and we'd like to share some important water safety tips:
- Swimming lessons save lives. Swim lessons help young children to learn to float, exit and enter the water safely, tread water, and other lifesaving water skills.
- Wear a lifejacket. Even with a strong ability to swim, when faced with fear the reaction is different. If you’re in need of a lifejacket for a child this summer, Snohomish County Life Jacket Loan Program is available free of charge from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. Learn more here.
- Supervise closely. Always have a designated responsible adult to supervise closely and constantly when children are in or near the water (including bathtubs). Adults should supervise children closely even when lifeguards are present.
- Use the buddy system. Always swim with a buddy and try to choose sites that have lifeguards on duty when possible.
- Enclose pools. If you have a pool at home, be sure to build a fence that fully encloses it that is at least 4 feet in height.
- Consider the color of bathing suits as you purchase them. Bright colored bathing suits can help a child be seen under water faster. More information on swimsuit color testing here.
- Learn CPR. Your CPR skills could save someone’s life in the time it takes for paramedics to arrive. For information on CPR classes in the Snohomish area, please click here.
