Student-Led and Family Conferences
Dear Cabot School Families,
As you know, conferences are approaching on November 1st. One of the goals of our work at Cabot School is to engage all learners in understanding their own learning journey and reflecting on that journey.
This fall we will be conducting student led conferences and parent teacher conferences for grades K-6. During these conferences, students will talk about one or two of their pieces of work, they will discuss their learning experiences and habits of work. This part of the conference will run for about 5-10 minutes, then parents will have the opportunity to talk to the teachers and ask questions, this will make up the other 10 minutes. This will allow teachers to share how students are doing in class and help parents understand
In grades 7-12, students will be leading their own student-led conferences. The purpose of student-led conferences is to engage and support students and family members as your child shares their learning together. Student-led conferences differ from traditional parent-teacher conferences in that the student is at the table talking about their own learning, learning to be an advocate for themselves, and asking the team of adults around them for support in areas of need. You’ll be invited to ask questions and to participate fully in the conference; student-led conferences are active conversations that result in your child knowing that there is a team of adults supporting their learning.
Are conferences a requirement? Yes. Students work hard to prepare to share their learning experiences with their families. Sometimes families might say, I already know what my child is learning. These conferences also act as a way of helping students, teachers, and families collaborate with each other to celebrate student success while also helping students name what they are still working on as students.
As students get older, they take on more responsibility in these conferences. In our middle and high school, students will continue to present their work, reflect on their learning, and lead their conferences. In high school, Crew Advisors will take on the primary work of helping students prepare for and facilitate this conference.
What if I want to meet with a particular teacher? Arts and PE teachers will be available during this time. You can reach out to them directly to set up a time to meet. We ask that you honor this process with students; they have been working hard to prepare your work and are excited to share it with you!
Logistical notes:
You will receive an email or letter from your student’s teachers or Crew Advisor setting up conference times. If you have students in multiple grades, your teachers can help you coordinate those conferences.
Teachers are holding conferences on Friday, November 1st during the day. We ask that you do your best to schedule conferences in that timeframe. Teachers may choose to offer alternative times.
Conferences are approximately 20 minutes in length and we ask that you honor that time.
Conferences will be in person and students must attend.
Please email Jen Tidd if you would like to set up a time to check-in with me on conference day.
We look forward to engaging with you and your child as they reflect on their learning during
Quarter 1.
Thank you everyone and have a wonderful weekend,
Dr. Jennifer Blake, Interim Principal
Hello everyone!

Do you want to Chaperone a Field Trip?
We are so lucky to have such a high interest in parents wanting to chaperone on school trips. The schools of Caledonia Central Supervisory Union are committed to student safety. All classroom volunteers and field trip chaperones MUST have a background check and fingerprinting must be completed before being allowed to be a member of a field trip.
Please call the school office to begin this process.
Thank you for respecting this commitment to student safety and partnering with us.
Registration 2024-2025 Winter Athletics is now OPEN
The 2024-2025 winter athletic registration for Cabot 7-12th, Twinfield 7-12th is now open!
Registration will temporarily close on Friday November 8th in order to gauge interest in each grade level. It is very important to sign your child up as soon as possible so that the CCSU athletic department can gauge the need for coaches, equipment and uniforms.
Twinfield/Cabot athletics offer the following opportunities for the winter season:
Twinfield/Cabot: 7/8th girls basketball, 7/8th boys basketball, 9-12 girls basketball, 9-12 boys basketball. We will explore bowling if there is enough interest.
Cabot and Twinfield high school students have the opportunity to play sports at another high school as long as a CCSU school does not offer that opportunity. Students interested in this opportunity (ice hockey, cheer, gymnastics, alpine and nordic skiing, dance, wrestling, snowboarding) should signup as a Member to Member/Independent Participant and email the Athletic Director.
You can register your student at CCSU Student Life.
If you are in need of further instructions on how to sign your student up for CCSU Athletics please refer to this document: CCSU Greetings from Family ID.
If you have any questions feel free to contact CCSU Athletic Director Randy Rathburn or CCSU Assistant Athletic Director Dana Welch.
Let's Get Ready for Spirit Week

Highlights From Our Week!
HUSKY OF THE WEEK - October 11
Each week one student from every elementary classroom is celebrated as “Husky of the Week.” This is our way to recognize individuals for demonstrating Cabot’s core values: Respect, Responsibility, Perseverance. These values tie directly to our Habits of Character and inform our Habits of Learning– a throughline connecting all of our students across campus.

Grade 1 & 2 -
First and second graders spent a lot of time enjoying the outdoors this week! We had our first field trip as a group together this past Tuesday to Burtt’s Apple Orchard. We had an amazing time and were lucky enough to be joined by our Kindergarten friends. Students spent some time with Greg Burtt who told us a little bit about how different types of apples are grown, and the importance of the pollination process. After that we had some time to walk through the orchard, enjoy the playground and explore the corn maze. Back at school we enjoyed the apples generously provided to us from the Burtts, along with some cider donuts and apple cider. On Wednesday we had our first session with Jason Brueck from Siskin. Jason took half groups outside to look for signs of animals starting the hibernation process during this transition between seasons. We were so proud of how well our first and second graders showed the Husky Way this week!
Story time with Rory
It is always delightful to go into the library to hear Rory read to students. One chilly day last week, Rory was sitting by her fireplace which was crackling reading to grade 3 & 4.
Middle School News
As part of our project exploring the theme of survival, 7th and 8th graders are learning about a variety of natural disasters impacting our life on planet Earth. Our current investigation focuses on plate tectonics and earthquakes: What causes them? Where do they occur? And, how do humans adapt to live in a dynamic world?
Students will also learn about volcanoes, tsunamis, hurricanes, tornadoes, flooding, wildfires and other survival situations.
Sam and Ryan work on a plate tectonics activity to consider what evidence scientists used to support the theory of continental drift.
Cabot / Siskin Goals:
To get outside and explore the natural world.
To develop life skills through outdoor experiences (HOWLS)—teamwork, communication, critical thinking, problem-solving, decision making, and resilience.
To cultivate curiosity and inquiry through nature-based activities.
To encourage physical activity and an appreciation for the outdoors
To cultivate an ethic of stewardship.
Siskin Kickoff
On Wednesday, Jason Brueck, from Siskin Ecological Adventures was on campus to continue our workshop series on primitive skills. Students learned the basics of how to start a fire with a bow drill, a form of friction-fire that humans have used for thousands of years. It’s not easy!
The activity connects with the “How to Start a Fire in the Backcountry” storyboard that students are working on in their literacy class. It’s a good way for us to work on “procedure writing,” one of the core writing genres. Our goal is to start a fire with a bow drill and celebrate with s’mores!
Introduction to Maps
This fall, students are learning about different types of maps and map features. Even though we live in a world with digital maps and automated driving directions, students still need fundamental map reading skills. In this activity, students are creating a scale drawing of the classroom.
High School News
Exciting news from the Green Mountain Patriots class! They’ve launched their Green Mountain Boys visual timeline project, diving deep into Vermont's rich history. Each student has selected a significant moment to research and master, transforming their findings into vibrant visual representations. But that’s not all—after completing their timelines, they’ll take it a step further by crafting 3D models of pivotal battles! These incredible displays will be showcased at the Cabot Historical Society, bringing history to life in a truly dynamic way. Stay tuned for the amazing results!
BATTLE OF THE BANDS
Hello Cabot School band families!
I’m thrilled to announce that we have been again invited to compete in Harwood Union High School’s annual Battle of the Bands on Friday, October 25th. This program is run by the former Cabot music teacher Brian Boyes, and is expanding this year to include a variety of workshops around music production, concert photography, music business, and songwriting.
As an after-hours extracurricular program, your student’s involvement is not mandatory and will not affect their class grade. It will, however, be a fantastic opportunity to develop their performance skills, to have the experience of a touring band, and to meet talented high school musicians from around the state.
We will be leaving Cabot School at 12:45 PM on Friday, October 25th in three separate staff vehicles. Workshops run from 2:00-5:00 PM at Harwood Union High School, and pizza will be provided to all members of the band. The concert will begin at 7:00 PM and should be finished by around 9:00 PM, depending on the final number of performing bands. We will then pack up our instruments and gear and return to Cabot School, hoping to arrive around 10:00 PM.
All are welcome to come to the show! Tickets are $5.00 for students, $10.00 for adults, and $15.00 for a whole family, and all proceeds go to support the Harwood Union Middle and High School music program.
Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns.
Thank you, Jonny Flood

The varsity squad wraps up the regular season on Saturday with a game at Paine Mountain (11 am start time). With a 10-2-1 record United is currently in 4th place (out of 18 teams) in D3 and is slated to host a home playoff game next Tuesday or Wednesday (in Danville).
