Congratulations go to seven Rowland High School students who were named Commended Students in the 2025 National Merit® Scholarship Program. Rowland High School's commended students are Javier Bahena, Nina Bai, Travis Chow, Kareem Farhat, Amanda Li, Gabriel Linares, and Samuel Park. With a Selection Index score of 208 or above, these high performers have shown outstanding academic potential. From more than 1.3 million program entrants, each of these students is among the 50,000 highest-scoring participants.
Senior of the Week
Laura Ramirez was nominated by her counselor Mrs. Hupman. Despite facing numerous challenges, Laura remains dedicated to her academic pursuits. Her unwavering commitment to education is complemented by her recently joining the Girl's Flag Football team. Her resilience in overcoming obstacles and her drive to achieve her academic goals serve as an inspiration to her peers and a testament to her character.
Athlete of the Week
Leah Ng was nominated by her volleyball Coach Varela. Leah is our youngest player on the team as a sophomore. She has been the most consistent player on the team this pre-season. Leah is currently playing the Liberian position and is a stand out player on the court. I admire her knowledge of the game, but most of all I enjoy seeing her love for the game. Keep hustling Leah, your efforts are greatly appreciated.
Scholar of the Week
Wick Duangrath-Herrera has been nominated by the social science department. Wick is a standout student in AP Psychology, consistently demonstrating excellent communication skills. He articulates his thoughts and ideas clearly, both in writing and during class discussions. Wick not only applies psychological concepts and theories to his own life but also asks insightful questions and shows a genuine appreciation for the perspectives of his peers. Beyond the classroom, Wick is actively involved in the Jazz Band and Orchestra, further showcasing his dedication and versatility. He is a scholar, a role model for other students, and a true embodiment of our Raider goals: thinker, contributor, and communicator.
Art Person of the Week
Chloe Chow was nominated by her photo teacher Mr. Nunes. Chloe started the year enthusiastic about creating art. She has created some beautiful pieces in Photo II putting in time, effort and care into her art. I look forward to seeing what she continues to create this year.

English Department
The English courses at Rowland High School build and progress from 9th to 12th grade. Every year students develop their reading, writing, and listening and speaking skills. Whether it is through whole class instruction, small groups, or independent work, teachers provide a variety of opportunities for students to enhance their skills in order to excel at RHS and post high school. Teachers started off the year getting to know students; whether it was a “Who Am I?” project or creating identity slides, students had the opportunity to share who they are in and outside of the classroom, incorporating the Raider Goals of being a thinker, contributor, and communicator. Building relationships, addressing social and emotional well-being, and working towards academic success are what all English teachers strive for. As all students start to dive into the curriculum, they will have access to a variety of texts - Wiesel’s personal narrative of his Holocaust experience in Night, the hero’s journey in Beowulf, the pursuit of the American Dream in The Great Gatsby, possession and materialism in the All That Glitters Unit, introduction of non-fiction texts in AP Lang, and analyzing societal norms and expectations in regards to gender in The Awakening.
Exploring Contour Line and Conceptual Inquiry: Artistic Journeys at Rowland High
At Rowland High, our Art 1 students are deepening their artistic skills by constructing their own still lifes and honing their mastery of contour line drawing. Working on large 18x24 inch paper, students are carefully arranging objects in their compositions, paying close attention to the relationships between them. They are also introducing weighted lines, laying the groundwork for an upcoming unit on value and shading.
In our AP Art class, students are embarking on their Sustained Investigations, crafting artwork that reflects their own research and conceptual explorations inquiries. These pieces are not just art—they are visual responses to complex, thought-provoking questions. Current investigations include: How much influence does the fashion industry have on society?, Why are we uncomfortable in our own skin?, How do viruses in technology and real life mirror each other, and how are they the same/different?, and What does “growing up” really mean?
From developing observational skills in Art 1 to tackling profound conceptual inquiries in AP Art, our students continue to push boundaries, blending technical expertise with personal and societal reflection.
