Principals Message
Many amazing things were happening in our Eagle Nation this week. We just wanted to take a moment and thank everyone for making it a great week for learning and fun:
- Thank you to everyone for getting to class on time and ready to learn this week. We have noticed much improvement these last few weeks, with fewer students marked tardy to class or missing class except for 5th period. It is essential to be in class on time for your learning. To help with this, we will limit hall passes during the 5th period until the end of the day after 2:50 PM because every minute of learning is essential. See CHS Attendance Corner - Changes to End of the Day Hall Passes message below. So, Way to go, Eagles. Now let's do even better to learn every minute and support CSD Strategic Plan - Roadmap '27 -GOAL #4: Ensuring Equitable Access to High-Quality Academics.
- Our Winter Sports Teams are rocking, with many of our teams having big wins this week. Congratulations to Boys and Girls Basketball, who had strong wins this week at home against Hood River and away against Milwaukie. Our CHS Swim Team did an outstanding job at Canby, and CHS Cheer took first place at the Lion Cheer Challenge last weekend. Our Westling team competed against Hillsboro and is hosting the Centennial Dual Tournament today. Our CHS Cheer team is also competing today at the Scotsmen Rumble, and our Girls' Wrestling team is competing at Hood River. Thank you to all the students, staff, families, and community members who support our Eagle at all these games and supporting CSD Strategic Plan - Roadmap '27 - GOAL #3:Centering Student Voice, Empowerment, & Leadership.
- We had an excellent turnout for Winter SUN, which started this week. We also offer three after-school Credits-barring classes that started this week, giving students 0.5 credits each. If you are interested in any afterschool clubs or signing up for one of our new afterschool classes, stop by the SUN room to learn more and support CSD Strategic Plan - Roadmap '27 -GOAL #4: Ensuring Equitable Access to High-Quality Academics.
- Our Big Eagles are sharing their culture with our Little Eagles and letting them know everyone belongs in our Centennial Community. Check out the pictures of our Big Eagles High School Mentors playing the ukulele and singing with their Little Eagle Powell Butte mentees during lunch at Powell Butte Elementry. Thank you, Big Eagles, for making a difference and for everyone who is supporting this program in our Eagle Nation and helping reach our CSD Strategic Plan - Roadmap '27 - GOAL #2: Supporting Every Student’s Wellbeing & Inclusion.
Shout out to our Counseling Department, which is working hard to empower student choice and help students get the classes they want and need. They are giving up several lunchtimes over the next few weeks to meet with students about their 5-year plans and schedule change requests and ensure that students are on track to graduate. Counselors will be available outside the cafeteria on January 27th and February 3rd and by appointment in the counseling office anytime. Please remember that the deadline to request changes to your TRIMESTER 3 schedule is February 5th. So, if you have questions, meet with your counselor today so they can support you in CSD Strategic Plan - Roadmap '27 - Centennial Profile of Graduate.
- Also, on Wednesday, our 10th-grade students learned more about the Center for Advanced Learning at the CAL assembly. This is just one of the many options for different learning experiences they can sign up for as 11th-grade students supporting CSD Strategic Plan - Roadmap '27 -GOAL #4: Ensuring Equitable Access to High-Quality Academics and CSD Strategic Plan - Roadmap '27 - Centennial Profile of Graduate.
- Thank you to everyone who made Thursday's "Talk a Mile" event happen. With all that is going on in our community and the world, it is more important to talk and understand one another to effect real change. That is why it was so impressive that on Thursday, several of our CHS students partnered with Gresham Police Officers, Gun Violence Prevention personnel, or local community leaders and spent time walking around our CHS track together for 1-mile sharing ideas and working to understand each other different perspectives. This understanding of our students' voices will help to impact decision-making positively and support better connections in our community. Thank you to everyone who made this possible. We look forward to more"Talk a Mile" Opportunities in the future where our students can excel in CSD Strategic Plan - Roadmap '27 - GOAL #3:Centering Student Voice, Empowerment, & Leadership -Each student will be empowered to use their voice and exercise choice within their classroom and school communities.
- Also, on Thursday, CHS hosted the inter-district Centennial Middle School vs. Oliver Middle School Basketball Games. Oliver Middle School came away with both the 7th and 8th grade team wins, but both games were hard-fought and close. The 8th-grade OMS vs. CMS was super exciting to watch as it came down to the wire with a photo finish, and the Owls were able to hold on at the buzzer to win. Both Teams did an outstanding job showing their respective school spirit and good sportsmanship. Thank you to everyone who came to cheer on our future Eagles and support CSD Strategic Plan - Roadmap '27 - GOAL #2: Supporting Every Student’s Wellbeing & Inclusion.
- Also, our students did an outstanding job in their One Act Plays presented on Friday, with both their performance of "The Yellow Wallpaper" and the very funny comity "I Quite! - A Guide to Leaving Your Job in Style". There was a great turnout to support our students, with 100+ people in the audience. Thank you for supporting our CHS Drama program, and make sure to come and watch CHS Drama Department Regional Showcase Night this coming Tuesday at 6:30 pm to see even more outstanding acting and supporting CSD Strategic Plan - Roadmap '27 - GOAL #3:Centering Student Voice, Empowerment, & Leadership.

CHS Attendance Corner - Changes to End of the Day Hall Passes
As we arrive at this halfway point of the trimester, the attendance team would like to share some information about changes to hallway passes during 5th-period classes. One of our goals as educators is to maximize the time that students have access to instruction as well as make the best use of said time.
We also aim to have a consistent approach to student travel outside the classroom. Due to increased student traffic in our hallways during the last period of the day, hallway passes will be limited to only be used/issued between 2:11 PM and 2:50 PM on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. Since Wednesdays have a shorter schedule, the hallway passes will be permitted from 2:24-2:50 PM.
As always, there is flexibility built-in for students with documented accommodations as well as emergencies. Yet the expectation is that all students prioritize their learning and academic pursuits and make use of their time management skills.
Maurel Merette - CHS Dean of Students and The CHS Attendance Team
Don't hesitate to contact the Dean of Students with questions, concerns, or suggestions. We are always glad to hear from our community.
Have a great weekend, and don't forget to schedule your parent-teacher conferences. These are taking place next week!

Inclement Weather - Be Ready! Reminder
With the colder winter months just around the corner, we want to remind families and staff of the procedures used by our District when inclement weather occurs.
The Centennial School District maintains a preparedness plan for the monitoring of inclement weather and potential weather-related impacts on school operations, including our facilities and road safety for transportation. As these impacts are evaluated, there may be changes to the school schedule, such as a school closure, a delayed start to the school day, or an early dismissal. Snow routes for our school buses will also be used when road conditions are deemed unsafe by our Transportation Department staff.
When inclement weather causes changes such as these, we will notify our staff and families using multiple methods:
- ParentSquare messaging (text, email, app notifications, and/or voicemail). If you need assistance registering for the ParentSquare app, please contact your school office.
- Centennial School District website: www.csd28j.org
- Social Media (Facebook: CentennialSD28j / Instagram: centennial_schools)
- Flash Alert notifies local news stations. Individuals can subscribe to receive FlashAlert updates for Centennial School District here: http://www.flashalert.net/id/centennialsd
Parents/caregivers, if your email address or phone number has changed in the last year, please contact your school office to ensure we have your up-to-date contact information.
