PRINCIPAL'S CORNER
Dear Families,
We have had so many fun events since my last message. Thank you to BSCO for another fantastic Jog-a-Thon and the fabulous Monster Mash Bash! Thank you also for bringing the OMSI assembly and to everyone who supported the Jog-a-Thon and made it possible.
Our students benefit so much from all of the volunteers that give of their time and talents to support teachers and students. We are lucky to have amazing volunteers in our building every day! I also want to give a shout out to our awesome teachers who work so hard to provide engaging instruction and fun experiences for our students. If you are able to come into the building to volunteer or attend conferences next week, you will get to see the wonderful displays of creativity and learning that line our hallways. If you follow bonnyslopebsd on Instagram you will also get glimpses into what is happening in our classrooms and around the school.
Have you heard about the new Golden Bobby awards? Each week our staff awards a golden spoon and golden whistle to classes that demonstrate excellence in the cafeteria and at recess. Each month, our specialists will award the Golden Bobby to one lower grade and one upper grade class for their achievement in following our school-wide expectations in their classes. There will also be Golden Bobby awards for classes that demonstrate overall commitment to being the best CATS each month. Watch the short video below to see who received the October Golden Bobby Awards for October. This month, our custodians will also award a golden dustpan to the most tidy classrooms.
Our current Kindness in the Classroom topic is "caring," and I hope students are sharing with families about how caring is important in our school community and what we can do to promote kindness, empathy, and respect. You can read more about the lessons in the "Student Success Corner" below.
I hope everyone enjoys the long weekend and I look forward to seeing families at school next week during conferences!
All the best,
Betty
STUDENT SUCCESS' CORNER
Our second unit concept in our Kindness in the Classroom curriculum is Caring. Over the next few weeks our students will be learning more about what caring is and ways to demonstrate it. Our kindergarten classes will focus on caring and its four helpers – helpfulness, gratitude, compassion and empathy. In first grade our classes will focus on exploring how to be caring in a variety of contexts. Caring allows us to show respect for ourselves and others through kind actions and words. Our second grade classes will focus primarily on helping students care for themselves, for others, and for their learning environment. They will do this through lessons on compassion, empathy, sympathy, and helpfulness. In third grade our classes will focus on exploring caring and how it incorporates helpfulness, gratitude, compassion, empathy, and kindness. Empathy and gratitude are explored in depth as tools for expressing caring. Our fourth grade classes will learn a number of valuable skills in this unit that will help them to care for themselves and others. They will learn to identify what causes them stress and how to manage it so they are less stressed. In fifth grade students will learn how to care for themselves and for others by learning how to stop the spread of rumors and gossip. They will also learn - or relearn - the power of making a sincere apology and offering forgiveness. These topics can feel a little tricky, but it is critical they have the skills to give and receive forgiveness. This is the ultimate show of caring and compassion - both for yourself and for others.
Moon Tree
Hello Bonny Slope Families! We are pleased to inform you that we are the lucky recipients of an authentic NASA Moon tree. The seed of the tree orbited the moon and has gone farther into space than any human being has.
This tradition started on the Apollo 14 mission when the first seeds were sent into space on January 31st, 1971. In honor of that mission, NASA decided to send off a new generation of seeds into space. This next generation of moon missions is called Artemis, named after Apollo’s twin sister. Our seeds were on the Artemis I mission, which launched on November 16th, 2022, and returned that December.
It is special that Bonny Slope was chosen to receive a Moon Tree because it symbolizes exploration, discovery, and achievement, which are all important to us.
The Moon tree will be planted on the hill by the bus loop for people to observe and admire. We hope that the community can help us take great care of this seedling as we work to get it established for a long life ahead on Bonny Slopes property.

Student Directory - Now Available Online!
This year’s Student Directory is now available online for downloading directly to your favorite device!
The URL and password required to access the Student Directory will be sent directly to you this week, through your student’s teacher.
Each year a directory of Bonny Slope students is published in the Fall and shared only with other Bonny Slope Elementary families. It includes student and parent contact information as well as class lists to be able to connect with other classmates’ families.
Information included in this Student Directory comes from the data you provided to the Beaverton School District (BSD) in completing your student’s Fall verification/registration for the 2024-2025 school year. If you indicated with BSD that your information remains unlisted, it will be excluded from this Student Directory, unless you requested otherwise by submitting an online Directory Change Request Form with BSCO.
