Osprey Family News - Winter 2025

The New Year is upon us and I hope that you and your family had a wonderful holiday season. This week OVS will be conducting mid-year Science Check ins for 5th and 8th graders and EOC and CTE exams for the first semester for high school students. All testing will take place at Southwest High School in their "L" Building. This building is to the right of the main building if you are facing the school. If you are coming to the high school from Hwy. 24/258 it will be the the entrance closest to Blue Creek Elementary on the right. High School students need to arrive no later than 7:30 a.m. on their testing days and middle and elementary students need to arrive at 8:15 on Tuesday, January 14th. OVS Picture Day has been canceled for Wednesday, January 22nd due to inclement weather. Pictures will no be taken on Monday, March 17th at the Eastern Regional Skills center at 261 NW Corridor Blvd, Jacksonville, NC 28540 from 8:30 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. No appointment is needed, please call our office if you have any questions.

OVS Commitment Forms for the 2025-26 School Year will be going on on January 29th with report cards. You will receive these via mail and email. They are due back to our Offices by February 7th. Please keep in mind this is a one year commitment. There is not a hardship process by which you can be released to return to brick-and-mortar after you sign your commitment form. Staffing decisions are based on the numbers we receive through the lottery and our commitments. OCS will be closed on Monday, January 20, 2025 in celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Enjoy your day in remembrance of Dr. King and his contributions to our country.

Thank you Mrs. Ringham and OVS staff for making this a wonderful experience for our students in the past and we look forward to this year's dance. This event will be held at Sturgeon City on March 22, 2025. Guest approval forms are uploaded on our school website so please complete this form if you plan to bring a guest. The "Escape the Nautilus" event will be on February 12th at the Onslow County Public Library and will start at 2:00 p.m. This is an escape room activity. Tickets must be purchased by this Friday, January 17th at the price of $40.00 in order to attend the escape room activity as well as the prom. Regular prom/dance ticket sales will resume on 1/23/25 at the price of $50.00. Parents and students can call our office with any questions.

If you have students currently enrolled with OVS, we would love to have you return as Ospreys for the next school year. We will send out commitment forms for the next school year. We will mail these forms along with report cards and email a copy as well on January 29th. The forms will be due back, completed and signed, by Friday, February 7th. This is a year-long commitment for the 25-26 school year, please keep this in mind as you make your decision. OVS Middle and High school classes operate on a 5 period day with each period lasting 75 minutes with 5 minute transitions between classes and a half-hour for lunch. The final 30 minutes of the day is called "Osprey Time", this is a time where students can receive additional instruction or intervention if needed, ask questions privately of their teachers , or participate in clubs and other activities at OVS. Elementary students do not "change classes" between teachers, but each teacher will share a schedule for the students of Reading, Math, Encore times, etc.

Onslow County Schools has six Early Release Professional Development Days built into our school calendar. The days are used to allow for required professional development for staff in the afternoons. On these days school will conclude at 11:55 a.m. and the schedule has been arranged to allow for students who change classes to have the same time in each period. These ERPD dates are as follows: 9/18/24, 10/9/24, 11/20/24, 2/12/25, 3/12/25, and 4/9/25. The schedule above reflects the period times for middle and high. Elementary teachers will share subject times for their classes individually.
