The Waldorf School: What are we Trying to Do with Your Children?
It is impossible for us to know what the world will be like when today's children are called on to accept responsibility for our society and our planet. The only thing that we know for certain is that they will inherit a world steeped in complexity. To live a life filled with meaning and purpose and still to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing world, they will need a wide array of capacities: physical health, emotional sensitivity and resilience, and above all a truly sound creative intelligence. This requires teachers to care for all of the faculties of the human soul and that's easier said than done and a big reason why our schools seem so different. Come join us and hear more about the critical work that's going on behind the scenes.

Help With Attendance Communication
Thank you so much for keeping us informed when your child needs to stay home from school. As part of our increased safety measures this year, we are taking attendance earlier in the day and will notify families if a student is marked absent and we have not yet heard from a parent. While you are welcome to loop in the teacher of your student, please make sure you are communicating with the front office by either emailing amy.bull@siskiyouschool.org or calling 541-482-8223 ext. 14 before the school day begins whenever possible. Amy will also notify the teacher once she has received your message.
When leaving a phone message, please speak clearly and provide your child’s first and last name, grade, the date, and the reason for their absence. This helps us ensure that we have accurate records. Thank you for your help with this!

Oregon Battle of the Books
THE BATTLE IS ON! After an amazing year last year, where our school's fifth grade team “The Explosions” placed fifth at the state battle, out of over 6,500 teams, Oregon Battle of the Books (OBOB) is coming back to The Siskiyou School! OBOB is a statewide voluntary reading motivation and comprehension program sponsored by the Oregon Association of School Libraries and Library Services and Technology Act grant. Students in 3rd-8th grade regardless of ability, are exposed to quality literature representing a variety of literary styles and viewpoints.
OBOB’s mission is to encourage and recognize students who enjoy reading, to broaden reading interests, to increase reading comprehension, promote academic excellence, and to promote cooperative learning and teamwork among students. Students will form teams, read at least 4 books (up to 16) and compete in battles with the support of a parent coach. Reading, team meetings, and battles will occur outside of school hours. To learn more about OBOB please view their website at www.oregonbattleofthebooks.org or reach out to Amy Bull at amy.s.bull@gmail.com, and keep an eye out for the student permission slips along with more detailed information. Permission slips for students to participate are due no later than October 25th. Parent Coaches are needed! We need awesome adults to help lead the teams, please let Amy know if you'd like to help with this amazing program.
Help with Pumpkin Carving
Halloween is made so special here with over a hundred grinning jack-o-lanterns arrayed in Pine Hall. Come help the children carve with their buddies on Wednesday, October 30th. Different classes carve at different times, click HERE to sign up and help! Thank you!
Winter Assembly Fundraising
Help us get to the Bowmer! We'd like to invite our grandparents and grand-friends to a fundraising opportunity to help fund the Winter Assembly at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival's Angus Bowmer Theater.
We'd love to be able to invite all of our friends, family members, and community to watch the Winter Assembly with us. In order to accommodate all our friends, we'd like to rent the Bowmer Theater from OSF. However, the cost of renting the space is beyond our current budget.
If you'd like to help us open the doors to a larger audience for the Winter Assembly, please click the link below and donate $300 to our fund. In exchange, we're happy to offer you 4 reserved seats in the theatre along with recognition of your help in the Winter Assembly fundraising.
Thank you!
Butterfly Class - 5th Grade
The Butterfly Class has just moved into the studies of Ancient India. These stories are the earliest stories that weave human spiritual beliefs and their physical understanding of the world into one. The origin stories of Brahma creating all the world, the epic Ramayana, Prince Siddhartha, as the last incarnation along the journey to enlightenment, and others provide a gentle awakening as the 5th grade students are starting their journey of their awareness of place in the physical world and taking their first steps toward critical thinking.
In this year, their language arts studies will take them from the murky mix of spirit and physical world in Ancient India, right through Greek Mythology, and into the world of thinking and human importance in Greek History. These early days in our lessons are such a sweet time, and the transformation through the year is an honor to witness.
As a finish to our botany work, the class took a trip to The Grove of Titans and Stout Grove near the California coast. We walked through valleys of ferns, stood at the base of some of the world’s tallest redwood trees, and spent time enjoying life at the edge of the river. The children were full of calm and seemed truly moved by the beauty they experienced on the trip.
