📚 Literacy at Home 📚
Be your child’s reading buddy. Set aside time to sit next to your child and read together.
Read aloud to your child and continue to do so beyond the point when he can read independently.
Find a series. Children who like one book in a series will probably enjoy others in the series as well.
Read fiction as well as informational books about topics of interest to your child.
Make reading purposeful. Link reading to activities you are doing like cooking or reading a menu.
Use junk mail. Have your child find 10 words she likes and cut the words out and glue them on a piece of paper to read.
Read books on the go. Place books in the car so children can read as you are running errands or traveling.
Ask your child, “What’s the most interesting thing you read today?” Encourage conversations about what you and/or your child are reading

📅 2024 IAR/ISA Assessments 📅
Each spring, students in grades 3-8 participate in the Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR) as required by the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE). Students in grades 5 and 8 also participate in the Illinois Science Assessment (ISA). District 47 students will engage in these assessments during the months of March and early April. We will be in touch in the next few weeks with your child’s specific testing dates. ISBE typically provides individual student reports during the following school year for families to review. You can anticipate receiving the student reports during the 2024/25 school year. Click here for more information.

👨🍳 2024 Sodexo Future Chef Competition 👨🍳
The 2024 Sodexo Future Chef competition will be held Thursday, March 14 at 4:15 p.m. at Hannah Beardsley Middle School. This year's theme is "your favorite food from home" and District 47 students in 3rd-5th grades are invited to submit recipes! Recipes will be reviewed by Sodexo and one winner from each school will be chosen to participate in the competition. In addition, this year kindergarten - 2nd graders are invited to participate in a culinary coloring contest. Coloring sheets will be available at D47 elementary schools by February 13. Students who complete a coloring sheet can return it to their teacher, who will then forward it on to the cafeteria manager to be displayed in the school cafeteria. All recipes and coloring sheets must be submitted to school cafeteria managers by March 1, 2024. See the links below. Questions about Sodexo Future Chef events can be directed to Terry Wenzel, Sodexo general manager, at twenzel@d47.org.
📜 Erin's Law/Be Seen & Heard 📜
During the week of March 11 a brief follow-up video presentation of Be Seen & Heard©, an age and developmentally appropriate sexual abuse awareness and prevention program provided to students in fulfillment of Erin’s Law, will take place during your child’s STEM class. This very short refresher of the main ideas presented earlier this year reminds students how to stay safe and to communicate with their Trusted Heroes. If you prefer your child not participate, you may opt-out by contacting the principal in writing/email. If you have already opted out this year, you do not need to notify us.
