SCS Community Newsletter
Week of August 18, 2024
Principals' Message
Dear Shelburne Community School Families and Caregivers,
We are thrilled to welcome you and your children back to SCS for the 2024-25 school year! Our facilities and IT teams have been working hard all summer to make sure the building is ready to go for the first day of school next week. Thanks to their efforts, our big construction project is wrapping up ahead of schedule. The gym is ready for use, we're moving back into main office spaces, and the library will be ready to host classes and readers as soon as school is underway. The one area still affected is the front desk, where Jane and Jen are at long last getting a custom-built desk rather than the temporary one they've been using for many years. While they will begin the year in the same spot in the lobby they occupied last spring, they should be back in the main office shortly. We hope many of you can attend your child's "welcome back" visit on Friday 8/23 to see everything in person.
We know that many of you have been eagerly awaiting the bus route information for the year ahead. Bus routes can be found HERE and more bus information is detailed below. As a reminder, the school day starts at 7:45 this year, and the first day of school is next Monday, August 26. As the school year gets underway, we hope to create and sustain strong partnerships between school and home, as we know they are essential for student success. Please stay connected with us through our various communication channels and participate in school activities and events throughout the year. Reach out to your child's teachers at any point: we find that it's far easier to problem-solve as soon as an issue arises rather than waiting to see if it will work itself out. Together, we can create a positive and enriching educational experience for your children.
Safety is our number one priority. Per state guidelines, we will begin practicing our evacuation protocol a few times in the month of September. Our first time will be without the alarm, the next time will be with the alarm. We will continue safety discussions and practices monthly to help everyone feel more prepared if we find ourselves in a crisis situation.
Read on for more about timing, back-to-school tips, and ways to get involved as the school year kicks off. We hope you all enjoy a restful final week of summer! See you all next week.
Take care,
Alison, Brett, and Emily

Bus Routes
- SCS students ride eight buses that pickup and drop off students around the town. 2024-2025 Bus Routes, drivers, and approximate timing for stops are listed on the route schedule.
- If your exact street number is not listed, your child/ren should go to the stop that is closest to your home.
- Routes are designed to have students arrive at SCS ready to unload by 7:45.
- We aim to have buses depart the school in the afternoon at 2:45 (Except Wednesday, when they should roll out at 1:45). In order to make that possible, we use a staggered afternoon dismissal, with bus riders being dismissed first.
- Any bus/transportation questions should be directed to: Barry Russell: brussell@cvsdvt.org or 802-482-7120
- It is essential that your child’s transportation plan should be communicated to classroom teachers and on your PowerSchool information. Once school begins, any changes to the schedule provided must be communicated to the classroom teacher and Jane Graham in the main office. Please refer to the handbook for more information.
- We expect all bus riders to follow our Bus Use Guidelines for Students (BUGS). If your child is taking the bus, please review these expectations with them.
Stopfinder
The Champlain Valley School District will use a new app, Stopfinder, starting in the 2024-2025 school year. Stopfinder is the easy-to-use, secure, all-in-one app that allows you to have the most accurate information about your student’s bus schedule at any time from anywhere. You will be able to set up alerts to let you know when your bus is approaching for both morning pick-up and afternoon drop-off. Only parents and guardians will be able to see the information for their student(s) unless they authorize others to see their student’s transportation information in the app. The email address that is currently on file in Powerschool with the district will be used for Stopfinder setup. This is another important reason for families and caregivers to update Powerschool forms when requested over the summer. Please contact your school’s main office to make any changes to your primary email address.
Stopfinder can be downloaded for free from the App Store or Google Play. Stopfinder will require an invite and registration through the district prior to accessing your student’s transportation schedule. Please watch for a Stopfinder invitation, which should be sent to your primary email address, between August 15th and August 20th, 2024.
School Day Timing
MORNING ARRIVAL AND DROP OFF
- All students arriving early (before 7:45), should head to the School Street doors. They can choose to wait there until the school day begins or head through those doors to the gym for Morning Movement.
- No students should enter the building in the morning through the doors by the cafeteria/gym.
- Buses will continue to unload in the bus circle, starting at 7:45 this year.
- Any student who would like breakfast should head to the cafeteria as they enter the building. Hot breakfast will be available in the cafeteria first thing in the morning.
- Students arriving after 7:55 are tardy. They can enter through the School Street doors or the main entrance to get a late pass and head to class.
AFTERNOON DISMISSAL
- We will continue to use a staggered dismissal, with bus riders and students attending Part 2 dismissed first. Dismissal will begin at 2:38 for K students, with bus riders dismissed starting at 2:40 (1:40 on Wednesdays).
- As soon as buses have exited the circle, we will dismiss all students getting picked up, walking home, riding bikes, or attending an after school / athletics program at SCS.
- All pickups should take place at the School Street side of the building.
Gearing Up for Back-to-School (PreK-4 Tips)
Consistent Routines (Click photo for more info.)
Ever wonder how classroom teachers can engage all 18-20 students simultaneously for a 7-hour day? It's all about creating sustainable, consistent routines and encouraging as much independence as possible.
One way to do this at home, is to create a printable morning and/or bedtime routine chart for your child. Using a tool like this will help build confidence, independence, and empower your child to be ready for the day ahead. Setting consistent routines reduces stress and anxiety by creating a sense of safety and predictability for all.
Social Skills Kids Need (Click photo for more info.)
Review and practice some of these important social skills that are essential not only in the classroom or school environment, but also in life. Reach out to our teachers and/or counselors for additional resources to help your child develop these skills.
The Pledge of Kindness (Click photo for more info.)
Practice reciting this Pledge of Kindness Poem with your child to prepare them for our K-4 Celebrations (aka assemblies) this year. We recite this in unison, and many teachers have this available in their classrooms as well.
September is Attendance Awareness Month!
We are all excited to welcome you to a new school year filled with opportunities to learn and engage!
Getting into the habit of daily attendance is more important than ever. It helps to:
Reduce stress
Make it easier to connect with friends and teachers
Support learning
Please call us if you need help with attendance. Jen Marx, our Attendance Clerk, is more than happy to help, or relay concerns to the appropriate school counselor or administrator. She can be reached at 802-383-1102 or scsattendance@cvsdvt.org.
We are working to make our school environment a place where everyone can be safe, healthy, and learning. We will do our best to listen and partner with you so that our children have a successful year. Do not hesitate to reach out to our school team with questions or concerns.
Here’s how you can help;
Nearby Nature Volunteers Needed for 2024-2025 in grades K-2
Nearby Nature is seeking new volunteers for the 2024-2025 school year! This fantastic program brings place-based natural science lessons into our K-2 classrooms. Every month volunteers attend a training, do a bit of lesson prep, and lead a lesson alongside other volunteers. It's a great way to be part of the classroom community, explore the world around us, and have fun together. For more information or to sign up please email wendy.eberhart@gmail.com. You can also read about the program at https://nearbynature.fwni.org

Community Family Events
Want to deepen your learning and practice around race and raising kids? Sign up for one of two different community learning opportunities offered by EmbraceRace this fall.
Our Fundamentals Trainings are for caregivers at the beginning of their racial learning journeys or looking to fill gaps in their knowledge. The theme of the fall session is Racial Learning and Unlearning: Growing our Understanding of Race & Racism in the U.S. Participants will be grouped into White or People of Color cohorts, depending on how they identify.
Our Communities of Learning and Practice (COLPs) are for caregivers further along in their racial learning journey, who have reflected on their racial identity and engaged in previous learning and thinking about racial justice work. The theme of this session is Building Cross-Racial Solidarity in Kids (and Ourselves!) and, unlike previous COLPs, all participants will be grouped in mixed race cohorts. We ask that White participants take one Fundamentals course before joining COLPs.
Keep reading for important information, and to sign up. And if you have people in your life who would benefit from either of these courses, please do forward this email to them!
With appreciation,
The EmbraceRace Team
