Office Reminders
Hello Parents/Guardians,
Several cases of head lice has been identified at West Wing. I want to provide you helpful information about 5 ways to lower your child’s odds of getting lice.
Lice is very common between the ages of 3 and 11. Your child can have Lice and you may not yet know it. Lice eggs (nits) are often confused with dandruff. The difference is that dandruff will flake off, whereas a nit will stick to the hair shaft and have to be “pulled” off the hair strand.
Head Lice – Things to Know:
1. Lice like to crawl onto the body. They can’t fly or jump. They most often spread with head-to-head contact.
2. Don’t share combs, brushes, scrunches, hats, hoodies and anything that can come into contact with hair. Lice can live for about a day or two after falling off the body.
3. Lice don’t like to live on hard surfaces like plastic, but they can hang out on ear buds for a short time. Don’t share ear buds or headphones, but if you do, make sure to clean thoroughly between individuals.
4. Avoid sitting in the comfy couch in a doctor office or a library. You never know who sat there before you. Lice or Nits can live for about 48 hours on upholstered furniture and rugs. Young children can pick up lice when crawling around on carpeting. Sit on a wooden or plastic chair. And, as much as we love stuffed animals Lice love them too!
5. Do your Laundry! If your child does get lice, or you have been around someone with lice, there are some things you need to do. Lice die when exposed to temperatures greater than 128.3-deg. F for 5 or more minutes. Clothing, hats, jackets and any other items that are washable wash in HOT water (130-deg.F or higher) and then dry on HIGH heat. Can’t wash an item such as stuffed animals? Place item (s) in a plastic bag for 2-weeks.
Final Thought:
As uncomfortable as having Lice is, they won’t make you sick. They don’t spread disease, and they’re not a sign that you’re dirty. You can get lice even if you shower regularly and have super-clean hair. These little buggers “love” clean hair. I am attaching a link that will provide you with more information and always know that you can reach out to me at any time.
