Hola tod@s!
Felicidades to everyone for finishing up another school year! Congratulations to the 2024 BESO graduates! Your hard work and dedication have paid off, and we can't wait to see the incredible impact you'll make in the future.
As the summer break starts, it's the perfect time to focus on personal growth and preparation for the upcoming academic year. Here are some valuable tips and strategies to help you prepare for certification exams, practice self-care, and get ready for the new academic year!
1. Certification Exams
To effectively prepare for certification exams, starting early can help to reduce stress and improve performance. Practice when possible with exams to familiarize yourself with the format and improve speed and accuracy. Joining study groups or using online programs can provide diverse perspectives and clarify difficult concepts. Look up or ask any professors for Don't forget university tutoring services or websites available to use for practice. When studying make sure to take regular breaks to prevent burnout and maintain a healthy balance.
2. Self-Care
Taking time for self-care over the summer is essential for college students to recharge and prepare for the upcoming academic year. Focus on activities that bring you joy and relaxation. Practice mindfulness and meditation to reduce stress and improve mental clarity. Engage in regular physical activity, whether it’s yoga, running, or a favorite sport, to boost your mood and energy levels. Prioritize social connections by spending time with friends and family, fostering a strong support network. Make sure to get enough sleep and maintain a balanced diet to support your overall well-being. Remember, summer is your time to unwind and rejuvenate, ensuring you return to school refreshed and ready to succeed.
3. BESO Coming Up!
I'm glad to have seen many BESO's End of Year banquets taking place, celebrating the accomplishments of each affiliate. Congratulations to each officer team for finishing up a great year, and a warm welcome to the new teams stepping in. I recently sent out an email to each BESO affiliate requesting an update for the 2024-2025 BESO directory. Please fill it out so we can stay in contact for the upcoming TABE conference. Your timely response will ensure we have accurate information and can maintain effective communication. Thank you for your cooperation and commitment!

UTRGV Celebrates the First Group of B3 Scholars
The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley celebrated the first cohort of B3 (bilingual, bicultural, biliterate) Scholars during the Spring 2024 commencement! There were 386 undergraduate students recognized for completing the B3 Scholar Seal requirement. These students successfully completed at least 15 hours in courses that were designated as being taught in Spanish, bilingually, and/or with Culturally Sustaining Pedagogies. These classes are offered across disciplines including, Chemistry, Mexican American Studies, Bilingual Education, Biology, Philosophy, History, Music, Studio Art, Astronomy, Environmental Sciences, Political Science, Communication, and Social Work, just to name a few areas. Since 2015, there are about 400 faculty members that have participated in teaching one of almost 5000 courses offered with these designations. Most of these faculty members have completed professional development sessions that focus on “B3-ifying” their courses.
The Office for Bilingual Integration organized a B3 Pinning Ceremony celebrating the first group of B3 Scholars on April 17 at 6:30PM (Edinburg) & April 18 at 7PM (Brownsville) for the students and their families. Dr. Julieta García, the previous University of Texas Brownsville President, graciously delivered a keynote talk that commemorated the importance of the B3 Scholar Seal and offered words of inspiration. A student was nominated by faculty from each campus to deliver a speech on why it was important for them to earn the B3 Scholar Seal. Additionally, each ceremony displayed personal quotes from the students expressing what being a B3 Scholar meant to them and their future. The ceremony was mostly delivered in Spanish to honor the language of the families and graduates. After each ceremony, the B3 Scholars, their family, and special guests were invited to a small reception.
The B3 Scholar Seal
The B3 Scholar Seal serves to acknowledge undergraduate students’ bilingualism, biculturalism, and biliteracy in Spanish and English through relevant coursework.
