The First Day of School is Almost Here!
I am excited that the school year is upon us! Teachers have been back in the building learning, collaborating, and getting their classrooms ready for the first day of school. We look forward to meeting students and families at our back to school night on August 12th. Please make sure that you come to meet the teacher, check out the classroom, deposit lunch money, visit with our Amazing PTO, and take your back to school picture with our 'card the yard' sign! Can't wait to see our bright and shining Portal Stars for this school year!

Teacher Assignments
Teacher assignments came out today. If you did not receive an email please check your junk email first. An example email is attached! We are so very excited to welcome you and your child to Portal Elementary for the 2024 - 2025 school year! Teachers will send out their welcome letters/emails to you next Monday, August 12th in the afternoon.
Back to School Night "Open House " 6-7pm
August 12th
Our Open House is a time for families to come and meet the teacher and to visit the classroom. It is also a time to practice how your child will get to and from school each day if your child walks or gets picked up at a specific location. In addition, stop by our Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) table. Please consider joining the PTO, or check to make sure your contact information is correct and enjoy a popsicle courtesy of our PTO! We would kindly ask that popsicles are enjoyed outside of the building so that our custodians can keep the inside of the building clean and ready for students the next day!
Check out our "star requests" located in the front vestibule of our building. Here teachers have back to school wish list items they would love to have donated to their classrooms. Stars are hung up by grade level, if you would like to donate items to the classroom, take a star listed underneath your child's grade level. This is a great option to give the teachers & classrooms exactly what they need!
Lunch
Elementary Lunch $2.45
Cold Lunch students can purchase milk a la carte for $0.75
Lunch Visitors
We'd love for you to have lunch with your student & you will have the option to do so beginning after Labor Day. We want to make sure our students & staff get into a good routine first before having visitors come up. We greatly appreciate your understanding. A Sign-Up Genius link will be included in our September SMORE for visitors wanting to come up for lunch. More information will be released in the coming weeks. You can find more information, including how to fund your student's account by clicking on the link below.
Absences & Attendance
Communicating an Absence
Please call the front office at 402-898-0425 to notify us if your student will be absent or late for any reason. You may also email carrie.evert@plcschools.org.
Please notify us before the start of our school day. If your student is ill, please state the symptoms of the illness. If your child is experiencing a fever over 100.4 they can not attend and must be fever-free for 24 hrs without fever-reducing medication before returning to school.
Students who need to be picked up early are required to have a parent sign them out. You will need to come into the office to sign them out.
Health Office Information
Our Health Office is managed by our health paraprofessional, from 7:50 a.m. to 3:05 p.m. every school day and our registered school nurse, Kaylan Severson, is at the school at least once a week.
The Health Office will contact a parent when:
- A student has a temperature of 100.4 fever of higher
- A student has vomited or has diarrhea
- A student has an injury above the shoulders
- A student has a bathroom accident
All medications sent to school require a signed Medication Administration Form to be kept on file in the Health Office. This applies to prescription medication and over-the-counter medication. You can download health forms here https://plschools.org/Page/1119
Prescription Medication: This MUST be in the prescription container, properly labeled to include the student's name, physician's name, and directions for administering the medication at school. Prescription medication will be given with written permission from both the parent and licensed physician (a current prescription label from the pharmacy will be accepted as written permission from the physician). We cannot administer EXPIRED medication.
Over-the-Counter Medication: This will be given with written permission from a parent with specific instructions for administration and is also required to be sent to the school in its original container.
Health Office - Medication Drop-Off
Medication Drop-off
If your child will require prescription medication to be stored in the health office (i.e., daily medication, epinephrine auto-injectors, Benadryl, inhalers, etc.) for the 24-25 school year, please drop this off before the first day of school. Our health office staff will reach out to ensure we have the proper documentation completed, as needed. Thank you for your support as we look to make sure everything is set up and ready to go for health needs prior to school starting.
