What is Microsoft OneDrive?
OneDrive is part of the Microsoft Office 365 family. It is a cloud storage system that maintains your files such as PDFs, spreadsheets, documents, and digital media, and recently added...LINKS!
What does it do?
In OneDrive, you can create and store online files and documents, upload existing files stored elsewhere, and share your files with others. You can access your files wherever you are and can collaborate simultaneously with others on any given file.
Depending if you use it for business or personal, the storage space may vary. OneDrive for Business conforms for organizations maintaining 1 TB of space for each user while OneDrive for personal use has a limit of 5 GB for free and increases.

Two Alternatives to Saving Files
There are two other ways to store files.
- When a file is shared with you directly (link is sent by email).
- When a file is sent as an attachment, which can be saved to OneDrive.
Directly Sharing through OneDrive
A file is shared with you through OneDrive and notified with a link by email. You must first click on the link in the email to have access to it through the OneDrive.
Saving Email Attachments
This feature was added early this year. You have the option of saving attachments sent through email directly to your OneDrive. The attachments are saved in a folder in OneDrive with 1 click!
Retrieving a Shared File
- To open a file shared with you, LOGIN to your Office 365
- The first time, you open the file, click on the BLUE link in the email sent to you.
- If you have opened it before, GO to your OneDrive and click on SHARED WITH ME.
Sharing With Others
Share your files from OneDrive with others by inviting them through the sharing feature or grab a link and copy/paste that where you need it.
Permissions
If you have shared your files and want to denounce those permissions, you can see in the last column in the list who has permissions to view or edit your documents. To remove an individual, simply hover and click on the that area that gives the names. When the popup box appears, go to the individual and select to remove the permission or edit.
There's an app for that!
OneDrive is a cloud based system, therefore, it can be retreived anywhere if you have any kind of device and internet connection. First, download the app. Then, sign-in using your district network credentials choosing to login with an organizational account. You now have access to your files and files shared with you.
Sync With Your Laptop
The last step in attaining all around access is syncing your OneDrive online storage with your laptop. The first you need to sync through OneDrive but after the initial setup, OneDrive will automatically update. Moreover, you can manually begin an update through your laptop.
