NESA Weekly Update
January 6-12
Director's Note
Happy New Year!
I hope everyone had a restful and relaxing winter break! It always amazes me how this reset allows teachers and students to come back re-invigorated and ready to learn.
For me, the break was a delightful mix of cozy downtime and festive outings. I spent quality time curled up with my furry companion (while my husband braved the work world), enjoyed some fantastic live music, and was mesmerized by the winter light show at the botanical gardens.
A few years ago, I made a New Year's Resolution to never have another resolution. It's the only resolution I've ever kept! I've come to believe that resolutions often feel like things we're taking away from ourselves, rather than adding something positive. Instead, I've started setting an "intention" for the year.
A few years back, my intention was "No." I realized I was spreading myself too thin trying to be everything to everyone, so I focused on learning to say "no" more often. This year, my intention is "Creating Space."
I want to look for ways to create spaces and opportunities for our students to grow and blossom. I want to create social spaces for my friends to connect and celebrate each other's unique talents. And most importantly, I want to create space for authenticity in myself and in the relationships around me.
What is your intention for 2025?
I can't wait to hear all of them...
Wishing you all a year filled with joy, growth, and meaningful connections.

A huge thank you to Martha Istueta
The NESA Dance department recently had the privilege of welcoming photographer Martha Istueta to campus for a session with our talented dance majors. The energy in the room was electric as Istueta, a San Antonio-based photographer originally from Cuba, captured the beauty and power of the dancers in motion.
More than just taking pictures, Istueta's passion for dance was evident throughout the session. Her joy was contagious, as she interacted with the dancers, some of whom she's known and photographed since they were very young. Hearing her offer technical guidance, reminding students about forced arches and battements, showcased her deep understanding of the art form. This expertise translates into stunning photographs, capturing not only the physical grace of the dancers but also the dedication and passion that fuels their art.
Martha's work is truly remarkable. Her ability to freeze moments of grace and power in motion, combined with her keen eye for detail, creates photographs that tell a story. We are so grateful to have had the opportunity to work with her and create lasting memories for our dance majors.
Istueta, with over 13 years of experience specializing in dance photography, has honed her craft across the United States. Her work is celebrated for its dynamic composition, skillful use of lighting, and ability to capture the essence of dance. Through her lens, she transforms fleeting moments into timeless images that showcase the beauty and dedication of dancers on their artistic journey.
