HISTORY OF SCHOOL LUNCH
Did you know...?
In the late 1800's, there was growing concern about childhood malnutrition. Women-led social movements were starting to form and first introduced the concept of providing nominally-priced school lunches to school children in the cities of Boston and Philadelphia.
Then during the 1930's, the Great Depression left millions unemployed and farmers unable to sell their crops, resulting in LOTS of hungry people. School lunches solved three problems! As part of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt's New Deal, the government bought surplus products from the farmers, hired out-of-work residents to cook the products, and fed the food to hungry school children... for many of whom, this was their only meal of the day.
Another motivation for the school lunch program, the government saw the effects of malnutrition on the military during World War I. Nutrition became a National Security concern to ensure that the United States had enough able bodies to fight if necessary.
In 1946, President Harry Truman signed the National School Lunch Act, making school lunch official throughout the country!
GLOBAL EATS
Taste of India
"For me, the best part about Global Eats is that it teaches how food can represent so much in different cultures and heritages and that the food we choose to eat can have a direct impact on how we understand each other." says Chartwells Chef Aarti Sequeira.
A few of the December menu options include Curry Chicken, Tikka Marsala, and Butter Chicken.
All Global Eats lunch options will be available to High School students on Tuesdays throughout the school year! All Global Eats lunch choices are included as part of the FREE meals to ALL students, so please encourage your student to try something NEW!
