Happy Friday, Surfside!
What a great week! The construction is moving right along, and over break we should see some more progress as trees are planted in the parking lot, the lot is being graded, and the retaining wall along Oceanside Blvd. is constructed. Also, our Sharks football team played the first game of the season and took a big win, 37 - 6.
Remember that next week is break and there will be no school, the students are off all week long.

K-5 News
Shark Nibbles…K-5th Updates
Dear Families,
Have a wonderful spring break! Enjoy any rest, peace, and relaxation as new memories are created.
iReady Diagnostics will need to be completed between April 15-April 30.
Grade 3-5 will also have the year end CAASPP Assessments that begin May 5. If your child is in K-2, I will mainly be focused on testing.
Testing Schedule: All tests for CAASPP will begin @ 9:30am-11:30am each day.
May 5: ELA Multiple Choice/Grammar/Vocabulary. Approximately 40 questions
May 6: ELA Writing. Students will read one or two articles and write an essay. My goal is a minimum of 100 words. Please work on this skill at home so they can feel comfortable typing and knowing where the letters are on a computer keyboard.
May 7: 5TH GRADERS ONLY: Science
May 8: Math Mostly Multiple Choice Abt. 40 questions.
May 9: Math Performance- Students reason through word problems and manipulate figures to solve math equations.

Don’t forget to order a yearbook! Middle School will have their own section. Yearbooks may be pre-ordered through the office for only $20.00.
Reminders-
Please do not forget to check in on your student’s Edmentum Account weekly, and look at their pacing status & on-target grades. Within each course, click “past target” at the top and check for assignments that have not been completed and are past due.
Field Trip-
The deadline to sign-up for the Safari Park Field Trip on April 28, 2025 was Monday, March 31.

P.E. Fitness Testing for 7th graders is for Tuesday, April 15, from 10:30-11:30 pm. The testing includes:
Cardiovascular Endurance: One-mile treadmill walk/run, timed
Muscular Strength: Push-ups, counted repetitions
Muscular Endurance: Sit Ups, counted repetitions
Flexibility: Sit and reach, measured in inches

New District Cell Phone Policy
"During the Day, Off and Away"
To create a focused learning environment and support student mental health, Oceanside Unified School District will now require all student cell phones to be off and stowed in backpacks upon entering campus and remain off until leaving. Exceptions are made for students with IEPs or 504 plans if specified for medical or anxiety-related needs, as determined by site administration. Classrooms have landlines for students to contact parents if needed, and students will have access to their phones during emergencies. The policy aims to reduce distractions, enhance engagement, and prevent cyberbullying, while also reducing the risk of phone theft or loss. Support and disciplinary actions for policy violations could include warnings, phone calls home, and phone confiscations, with increasing consequences for repeated offenses. OUSD is committed to student safety and mental health, fostering academic and emotional growth. For more details, refer to OUSD's Handbook.

Health & Human Development is COMING SOON
Health & Human Development - The California Healthy Youth Act, Education Code Sections 51930-51939(AB 329), was enacted January 1, 2016, this law integrates the instruction of comprehensive sexual health education and HIV prevention education. Instruction will be implemented the week of May 19-23. An in person preview of lessons and materials is scheduled for April 28, 8:00-9:00 am and April 29, 3:00-4:00 pm in the Surfside library. Families may also preview lessons on online.

Immigration Statement
Every family should know that every child in the Oceanside Unified School District (OUSD) has the Constitutional right to attend school regardless of immigration status. OUSD does not request or record information about a student’s immigration status. Federal and state laws protect student information from disclosure to others, including Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). OUSD does not permit non-students, including ICE agents, access to OUSD facilities unless they can produce a warrant signed by a federal judge. School administrators will not permit the disclosure of confidential student information without first consulting their attorney to make sure that the information has been properly subject to a federal judge’s warrant.
