Meaningful Moments
Prevent Underage Alcohol Use
October 2024 E-Newsletter
Please take a few moments to fill out this survey, which will help guide our efforts and better understand the needs of parents when addressing underage drinking.
Keeping You in the Game
Staying in the game as teens grow up means communicating differently. Be willing to listen to your teen's experiences. Let your teen know that youth who drink alcohol are more likely to injure themselves or others. It’s known to lower their inhibitions, and they make choices they wouldn’t normally make.
Moments of Opportunity
Memorable moments can happen any time and place. It's about keeping your eyes and ears open for an opportunity. Did you hear the lyrics of that song? What do you think about them? This movie seems to glamorize alcohol use. Do you think that's how it is in real life? What's the billboard over there telling us about alcohol? Use everyday situations to lead into discussion about the risks of underage drinking.
- Alcohol can impair judgment, leading to riskier decisions.
- Underage drinking interferes with normal brain development.
Congratulations! Your child has reached another milestone, and you discussed the risks of underage drinking with them. Now, it’s time to follow up on that initial encounter.
- You know what your child is passionate about. Have a discussion featuring how drinking alcohol underage could put that in jeopardy. Are your kids athletes or musicians? Are they working on their mental health or looking forward to the future? Find what hits home and discuss together what alcohol use could mean.

Viewing of Screenagers Under the Influence: Addressing Vaping, Drugs & Alcohol in the Digital Age
Join the Lake County Health Department for a virtual viewing of Screenagers Under the Influence: Addressing Vaping, Drugs & Alcohol in the Digital Age. We will have a viewing and some time for questions at the end. Register Here
Screenagers Under The Influence explores how our tech revolution has impacted teens’ views and behaviors around alcohol, vaping, cannabis, and other substances, and what parents, schools, and teens can do to support healthy decision making, such as harm reduction education, restorative practices, and improved family communication.
While a few documentaries do exist regarding severe drug addiction, there is a pressing need for a film on the more common scenarios around substance use and the spectrum of drug and behavioral dependencies, including screen-related behaviors. Screenagers Under the Influence will explore these issues and, most importantly, examine a multitude of solutions. The film will interweave cutting-edge science with many stories to create a film experience that appeals to both youth and adults.
