A Message from Dr. Di Nicola
Good evening, JLS Mustang Families!
First of all, to all of our Mustang moms out there, Happy Mother's Day! We hope you have been able to enjoy this beautiful day with your family and friends! 😊 💐
As always, here is a recap of the past week's awesomeness at JLS!:
JLS Staff Appreciation Week Fun!
This past week was one of our most enjoyable yet this year as we celebrated the JLS Mustang Professional Staff via our Staff Appreciation Week extravaganza, in addition to recognizing the great Nurse Rene Pettit for National Nurses' Day on May 8.
Monday, May 6: Thank you to our Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) for bringing coffee and sweet treats to our house areas...and opening a tab at King Street Coffee for enjoyment by our Mustang Professionals on either Monday or Tuesday!
Tuesday, May 7: Our staff participated in a Faculty Meeting surprise Trivia Contest, complete with prizes sponsored by our PTO. First place winners received an opportunity to order in lunch from a restaurant of their choice, second place earned ice cream treats from Brewsters, and third place won Starbucks gift cards! All of our staff participants are receiving special surprise courtesy cards from Manhattan Pizza and Chik-Fil-A this coming week!
Wednesday, May 8 - Friday, May 10: Our Mustangs presented over 900 HERD (Honorable-Engaged-Respectful-Determined) Awards to our staff by walking certificates individually to their honorees. It was quite a beautiful sight to see our Mustangs enjoying the opportunity to express their gratitude to their teachers and our support staff!
Wednesday, May 8: Thank you yet again to our PTO for sponsoring a delicious brunch/lunch for our staff, courtesy of Famous Toastery! Nurse Pettit received fun treats from the school leadership team, counseling staff, and administrative professional team, including a beautiful plant that is now enjoying the sun at home! We love you, Nurse Pettit!
Thursday, May 9: Our school leadership team delivered Tropical Smoothies to our staff individually...they definitely enjoyed the sweet surprise as a dessert treat after lunch!
Friday, May 10: We capped off the week's celebration by having breakfast provided for our staff in the morning...and then school leadership walked around to visit each team member, providing them with a SUNSHINE CARD of gratitude, a new Simpson compact umbrella, and a stylish pen.
In other words, it was an incredibly wonderful week for our educators...and we thank all of you as our students and families for contributing yourselves in such special ways for them on your own! It has been a sheer joy to work alongside such a talented staff of professionals all year long and I am excited to continue to do so well into the future!
Students Continue To Shine at JLS by Tackling Their SOLs!
Our Mustangs jumped right into their English: Reading Standards of Learning (SOL) Assessment with an early morning celebration as they entered on a red carpet lined by our staff members clapping them into the building, accompanied by our resident DJ (Mr. Derrick Jackson) blasting fun music, Monty the Mustang dancing amidst bubbles emitted by a machine, and gorgeous Positive Chalk Quotes etched upon the sidewalk by many former Mustangs and current educators/family members. Our Mustangs did such great work on their first SOL of the season...and we are confident that they shall continue to shine!
Crosstown Volleyball vs. Smart's Mill Was A Blast!
Our Mustangs showed up exemplifying radiant school spirit throughout our Crosstown Volleyball Match at Tuscarora HS on May 7. SO MANY students participated alongside our staff...and we appreciate the attendance of many of our families to support our grade-level and staff teams as well! Such a fun evening for us all!
National Junior Honor Society: 8th Grade Inductees Celebrated on May 8
Our Grade 8 Loiselle-Fawcett Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) members were formally inducted on Wednesday, May 8 in our auditorium. The event was beautifully led by Loudoun County HS National Honor Society members, advisors Ms. Jean Nibbelink and Ms. Lisa Hamilton, School Counselor Sabrina Jeane, and Grade 8 Dean Brandon Filsinger. We greatly appreciate the incredible energy of Victoria Doyle (Financial Technician) and Laura Ridings (House B Administrative Professional) in making the arrangements for all of our refreshments and cafeteria reception so perfect. We were very grateful to have so many family members attend as a tribute to their Mustangs, who beamed as they walked across the stage to receive their certificates! Our Grade 7 NJHS inductees will have their ceremony on Tuesday, May 14 at 6 PM...and we are excited to see all of our new NJHS members jump into some end of year service projects to support our students, staff, and community!
JLS Vocalists and Instrumentalists Shine at Hershey Park!
Many of our fine arts student musicians shined at their Performance in the Park endeavor at Hershey Park on Friday, May 10, earning two second place trophies along the way! Check out the picture below to see a few of our superstars smiling as a result of the victory and the fun as a team!
Loudoun County HS Rising 9th Grade Student Council Association Members Honored!
On Wednesday, May 8, several of our current Grade 8 Mustangs / future Grade 9 Captains who are participating as active members in the LCHS Student Council Association in 2024-2025 were formally recognized in their new roles by their high school classmates. Thank you to Ms. Herrin and Ms. Suttie for supporting this initiative alongside the leadership of our LCHS SCA Captains!
Grade 8 SOLs this Week / Mathematics SOLs for All Grades Next Week!:
This coming week our 8th graders will take their Civics EOC SOL Assessment on Monday, May 13 and then their Science EOC SOL on Thursday, May 16. All Mustangs will knock out their Mathematics SOLs on Wednesday, May 22. Without a doubt, we know that they will rock these tests gloriously! For full details and supportive practice tips for families about our forthcoming SOLs, please see the useful informational slide and guides attached below this opening message among our announcements in this week's edition.
Only five weeks remain of the 2023-2024 school year that has flown by considerably fast...right?! Let's continue to work as a team to make these final twenty-four days the best that they can be, functioning at our maximum potential with positive energy all the way to that finish line that leads to summer recharge and refreshment!
I hope that you have an outstanding week ahead...and we shall see you all super soon! 🐴💛💙

Simpson’s Unified Mental Health Team has some fun activities planned for our Mustangs!
- Our Mental Health Awareness Spirit Week will take place the week of May 20-24, 2024 with a variety of opportunities for students to participate, including a different theme for each day.
- During that week, students will have the option to create a My Emotions Wheel where they can use their creative and artistic talents to visually express the various emotions they feel and they will also be able to make a simple breathing stick out of pipe cleaners and colorful beads that they can use when they feel stressed, anxious, or overwhelmed.
- If you have any questions about our celebration, please feel free to contact your child's grade-level counselor (6th Grade: Alison Hyman, 7th Grade: Mica Thomasson, 8th Grade: Sabrina Jeane).

New Board Members Needed for PTO
The current PTO board is coming to the end of their long tenure and we are looking for new parents and teachers to step into vacant board positions.
We have one returning board member that is willing to spend next year passing along everything the board does. Without a minimum of a President, Secretary and Treasurer the PTO will have to dissolve.
There are many programs and ways that the PTO assists the school that will not continue without a board.
More information about the duties of each position can be found here.

SHINE! Spotlighting Heroes in Education Recognition Program
HRTD is excited to launch SHINE! Spotlighting Heroes in Education, a new recognition program that aims to tell the stories of the incredible work happening throughout the division. We encourage schools to promote SHINE both inside their buildings between peers as well as with their school communities through newsletters, websites and social media as all parents, students, staff and community members are welcome to submit a nomination. Each month, Loudoun Education Foundation will choose one submission to provide additional acknowledgement and a special gift.
How it works:
We are seeking submissions for LCPS staff members at schools, central office and support locations who:
Have gone above and beyond in a situation
Have inspired others or have a heartwarming story
Are doing something unique or creative that is leading to results
In general, ANY great news!
Complete the submission form (It’s short and easy!)
The Employee Recognition office notifies the nominee as well as their supervisor of the submission
The story may be placed on the Employee Recognition webpage.
Our goal is to place a spotlight on the hundreds of positive interactions taking place in LCPS each day...and especially at JLS! We look forward to seeing your celebrations of our JLS Mustang Professionals throughout 2023-2024!

SNAP Provides Eligible Families Access to Healthy Food
The SNAP in Schools initiative from the Virginia Department of Social Service, which is based on the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), helps develop partnerships to bridge the gap of food insecurity among school-aged children. The objectives of SNAP in Schools are to reduce food insecurity in school-aged children, to increase the number of students directly certified for free school meals through SNAP, and to increase the number of students eligible without application for the summer EBT program.
Please advise families who could benefit from this program to access the CommonHelp portal link to submit online SNAP applications.
