Happy World Teachers' Day!
We want to take a moment to recognize and appreciate the incredible dedication of our teachers who make a lasting impact on our students every day. Be sure to thank your teachers for their hard work!

This week also marks the end of the first 9-week grading period. If you have any questions about your grades, now is the perfect time to reach out to your teachers for assistance. Stay on top of your progress as we move into the next phase of the school year.

Looking ahead, Tuesday, October 8, will be an eventful evening. We invite everyone to attend our Title I Meeting, followed by the Meet the Principal event. Additionally, we will host ESL Parent Night and provide Volunteer Training. These activities offer valuable information and opportunities to connect with our school community.

Our Capturing Kids’ Hearts (CKH) focus for October is Self-Direction. This essential skill encourages students to create a vision for their future and take intentional steps toward achieving their goals. Instead of focusing on what we can't control, we are emphasizing the importance of making positive choices that shape our emotions, attitudes, and actions. Let’s continue to work together to build responsibility and leadership.

Important reminders:

• First Semester Grades: Grades for the first semester are approaching quickly, with the end of the grading period in just two weeks. Be sure to check in with teachers if you have any questions about your student's progress.
  
Fall Break: October 10th-20th—students will have a well-deserved break!
• Meet the Principal Event: October 8th—join us for a chance to meet school leadership, get updates from the Texas Workforce, ESL parent information, Title 1 resources, volunteer training, and more.
• SAT & PSAT tests on Tuesday, Oct 22nd
  
• Trunk-or-Treat: October 23rd, 6-9 PM in the school parking lot—a fun night for the whole family!
• Library’s Pumpkin Decorating Contest - Come in and decorate your pumpkin before 1st period on the morning of October 28 for judging.
  

• Cell Phone Policy Reminder :We are committed to creating an environment focused on learning, and our cell phone policy is an important part of that. Please remind your students that from 8 AM to 4:15 PM, our building is a phone-free zone. Unfortunately, we’ve had some issues with phones being used in restrooms and hallways, as well as earbuds being worn throughout the day. If students are caught with these items, they will be sent to the Assistant Principal’s office, and parents may need to pick these items up. Disciplinary action will follow the district’s guidelines.

No Food in Classrooms We’ve also noticed students bringing food and drinks back to classrooms after lunch, especially those returning from the Career Center, CTC or CCMR off-campus lunch. All food must be eaten in the cafeteria, and take-out drinks should be placed in a spill-proof container before entering the building. Please remind your students to eat before they come to class and follow these guidelines.

Critter Patrol We’ve had a few uninvited “guests” on campus, and we’re actively encouraging them to find a new home! In the meantime, we appreciate your help in keeping food and trash to a minimum in classrooms.

KISD is implementing immediate changes to our game day policies at Leo Buckley and Joseph L. Searles III Stadiums. Please take note of these new expectations that will be enforced beginning Friday, September 20, 2024:

• All KISD secondary students must have their student ID for entry into football games unless accompanied by an adult chaperone. The student ID must be worn and visible while the student is on district property.

• All KISD secondary students not accompanied by an adult chaperone will enter the stadium through a designated student gate. The student ID must be worn and visible at all times.

• Students from non-participating schools must be accompanied by an adult chaperone.

• On the home side: Only KISD students may sit in the student section. Students may only sit in the general admission section if accompanied by an adult chaperone.

• Throughout the event, KISD students must remain in the student section unless they are using the restroom or in line for concessions. The number of students allowed in the concession line will be limited to help with crowd control. After finishing in the restroom or concessions, students must return immediately to the student section.

• Any student not complying with these expectations or any directive from district administrators will be escorted out of the game.

Our clear bag policy remains in effect. Additionally, metal detectors and wands may be used at entrances.

Any student that needs academic support in their core courses, including Foreign Languages, can attend a tutoring session after school Monday through Thursday.

Students must be in their tutoring room by 4:30 and must conduct themselves in a manner that supports our building expectations. If your student is needing academic support, please encourage them to attend.

• Tardy Policy:
  Please encourage your student to arrive on time to their classes to avoid any disruptions. We’ve implemented a 30-second reminder before the tardy bell to help students get to class on time.

• Student IDs:
  All students must have their ID visible at all times—worn around the neck, not on backpacks or around the waist. This is crucial for maintaining campus security.

• Early Release Students & Missed Bus to KCC/CTC:
  Students with early release who choose to stay on campus must sign in and remain in the library. If your student misses the bus, they should notify the front office, and we will assist in resolving the situation. However, if the situation cannot be resolved, students must stay in the library until their next class on campus begins. Roaming the hallways is not permitted for safety reasons.

• Cell Phone and Electronic Devices Policy: Our new cell phone policy is now in effect. We're continuing with reminders on Tuesday and Wednesday, and starting Thursday, September 5th, we'll begin enforcing consequences for having electronic devices like cell phones, smartwatches, earbuds, and headphones out during the school day from 8:00 AM to 4:15 PM.
  

• Important Information for Parents: Each secondary student will be assigned a personal, secure pouch for their cell phone at the start of the school year. Students are expected to bring this pouch to school daily and return it in good condition at the end of the year.
  
• We understand that some parents may choose not to provide their students with cell phones or may prefer that their students not bring electronic devices to school. If your student does bring a device, they must either surrender it to the appropriate assistant principal or request a secure pouch in line with Administrative Procedure VI-EE.

As we start this exciting school year, I want to remind you that Shoemaker High School is a cell phone-free campus from 8 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. This includes smartwatches and earbuds, which must be put away during these hours.

Our goal is to minimize distractions and keep students focused on learning and engagement. Phones are available throughout the campus if students need to contact you, and in case of an emergency, we will notify families promptly.
