Attention Spanish Speaking Families: Our attendance office staff speaks Spanish. Call 993-7845 to let us know your student will not be in school or needs to leave early. Please do not call our Spanish Interpreter Ms. Claudia Shriner for this purpose.

NEW INFORMATION THIS WEEK!
Arrivals to School + Tardy Sweeps
Please remember that school begins at 7:40 a.m. each day except Thursdays. Students who are not in their first course’s room by 7:40 a.m. (except for late start Thursdays), are marked tardy. Cumulative tardies are added and will are addressed through the progressive discipline process.
This week, we will begin tardy sweeps at random to ensure students are making it to their classes on time throughout the day. Please encourage your student to be on time to each class period, and please encourage your students to be on time and ready to learn by 7:40 a.m. each day.
Learning cannot take place when students are not present.
“I CAN” FOOD DRIVE
Our SM West StuCo is coordinating with all of the schools in SMSD to promote the I CAN FOOD DRIVE.
The theme for our school is “CAN-sas Strong”.
Cans will be collected from Seminar Classes this week.
Cans of fruit & vegetables, peanut butter, cereal & pasta, canned meats are all items that Johnson County Christmas Bureau has need for.
FOR COMPETITION - we do not not count ramen as items, as JCCB has an excess of this item typically. Preference for no glass containers, as they have a tendency to break as they are shipped. Cash donations are also accepted.
This year - StuCo has identified some grudge matches. Turn in your cans to the teacher listed to earn points for your choice to win the grudge match.
National Art Honor Society - Schraad
Vs.
Cheer - Peterson
Seniors - Rabbit
Vs.
Juniors - McAlister
Sophomores - Ngo
Vs.
Freshmen - Stanturf
There may be additional challenges from other groups throughout the week, so students should listen to announcements from StuCo.

The Viking Advantage Donation Campaign:

Our PTSA goal is $9,000 in donations to the Viking Advantage Campaign which goes to support classroom grants and materials, classroom resources, student clubs/activities, SMW improvements, and student scholarships.
The PTSA is not asking our parents to donate personally. Rather, they are asking you to forward the flier to friends, family members, business, and community members who are willing to help our learning community. Simply scan the QR code and donate!

Texts, Email, and Phone Calls from SM West
Shawnee Mission School District Alerts
The Shawnee Mission School District has a comprehensive communication platform that allows parents to receive communication in a variety of ways: phone calls, text-alerts, and e-mails. Families can sign up to receive alerts in the manner that works best for them.
Alerts may include: Emergency messages, school closings, early dismissals, attendance information, and announcements from a school.
For family members to receive phone calls and emails, parent/guardian contact information must be up-to-date in Skyward. Please go to the Skyward Family Access Portal and make those changes on the Student Info tab.
Once the contact information is up-to-date in the Skyward Family Access Portal, to receive text messages, parents/guardians will need to opt-in by texting Y to 67587.
To review your communication preferences, visit the Skyward Family Access Portal and check preferences on the Skylert tab.

Having a strong relationship with your teen AND monitoring social media use can greatly cut the risk of mental health problems, including suicide or self-harm. Among teens that were surveyed about social media use, 60% of the high frequency users who reported having poor relationships with parents and low parental monitoring, also reported having poor mental health. Technology and MacBook Help
If your student has an issue with technology we ask that you FIRST try to do some independent problem solving.
1) Try going to the SM West Website to look at the Technology Rescue Site. This google site has many solutions that students can do at home to problem solve their tech issues.
2) Go to the "Lifesaver" icon on your browser bar. This takes you to the SMSD Help Desk to complete a Help request.
3) BE PATIENT. Please wait for a staff member to call you down to the library for assistance. Please be assured that staff are working very hard to meet the needs of all of our students.
