First Grade News
Frosty in First Grade
Grade one students are learning about Numbers and Operations in Base Ten. This unit focuses on counting numbers to 120, understanding place value, including grouping in tens and ones. We will begin working on comparing numbers using greater than, less than, and equal to.
In literacy, we are working on Unit 4, Animals Everywhere, with focus on comprehension skills and strategies that include plot and sequence, main idea and key details and point of view. We are learning about prefixes and suffixes, inflectional endings, and compound words. Please continue to practice the high frequency words with your child regularly. These are always found on the “Peek at the Week”. The students will be creating an animal’s habitat the week of March 18th as a culminating activity.
Read aloud and talk about it! Continue to read a favorite book with your child. Talk about where the story takes place, who the characters are, and the problem and solution. At times, even stop and ask what they think will happen next. Make sure the books are interesting. The more engaged your child is, the more information you will receive. You might want to ask your child how else this story might have ended as we are working on developing higher level thinking skills.
Thank you,
The First Grade Team
Second Grade News
The second trimester has been filled with lots of learning! We have been working on reading with fluency and expression, as well as writing about what we have read. Children have focused on finding main idea and supporting details, asking and answering questions, and identifying features of various genres. We also spent some time learning about the Lunar New Year by reading books and doing activities about this special cultural holiday. In Math, children are adding and subtracting two-digit and three-digit numbers with and without regrouping. Please continue to practice math facts daily to help support your child with higher order math concepts.
As always, please contact your child’s teacher if you have any questions or concerns.
Thank you for your continued support,
The Grade 2 Team
