From the PTA President
Hello Hickory Hounds!
As we enter Fall, we’re excited to launch our PTA Reflections program. We are continually impressed by our students' original artwork. Our first Family Night in September showcased this program, allowing attendees to participate in photography, a drum circle, author readings, and more.
We invite our families to join us for our annual Fall Movie Night, one of our favorite community events. We love welcoming families to enjoy the big screen and the crisp Fall weather.
At the end of the month, your PTA membership helps to grant you early entry into the Halloween parade. 1 PTA membership + 1 Adult Skechers Walk registration + 1 Student Skechers Walk registration= 1 early entry. To earn more early entry passes for your family, you need to register an additional adult walker and have an additional PTA membership for each pass. This is a great time to join or renew your PTA membership!
With gratitude,
Amy Brownstone

Library
The library has opened! Our Library Chair Sawa Funai, along with her amazing team of library prep volunteers worked hard through the summer and the start of the school year to sort, catalog, and remodel the library in preparation to open the doors to our students! Thank you to all of our classroom volunteers who will be running library time for each of our classes. In addition, we would like to extend our immense gratitude to our start up crew for their countless hours of volunteer time: Amy, Xindy, Yelli, Keri, Lina, Kumiko, Alicia, Kozue, Miki, Konomi, Chiharu, Julie, Amanda, Kururi, Kaori, Jessica, Hsin, and Nelly! This would not have been possible without you.
Please remind your students of the privileges of attending and borrowing books from our school library. Treat all books with respect, and make sure to have your students return them prior to their weekly library time.
If you would like to contribute to our library, our wishlist can be found HERE and our chair can be reached at Library@hickorypta.net
Adventures in Art: Become a Docent!
The Hickory PTA sponsored Art program, Adventures in Art, is still looking for a few more enthusiastic individuals to become Adventures in Art (AIA) docents for the 2024-2025 school year. No prior art experience needed—just a passion for art or volunteering! As an AIA docent, you'll receive training to teach five fine art projects throughout the year. This program is not funded by the school district, but by the PTA. PTA provides all supplies, lessons, and docent volunteers.
Interested? Sign up today at hickorypta.net/adventures-in-art and help us inspire the next generation of artists!

Thank you to Lina Awshee and Sawa Funai, Co-Chairs.
PTA Committees Need You!
All Hickory PTA programs rely on volunteers for planning and executing. The following committees are looking for volunteers to serve:
Direct Donation: Our Direct Donation campaign runs through December 31, 2024. We need volunteers to help plan Giving Tuesday and the prize structure.
Honorary Service Awards: Each year, Torrance PTAs recognize outstanding volunteers within our community for their service to children and youth. This committee identifies deserving individuals, presents the awards, and coordinates with the Torrance Council of PTAs. This committee will be forming in October to present awards in January.
Nomination Committee: This committee will seek candidates to serve on the Hickory PTA Executive Board for the 2025-2026 school year. The committee will be elected at the December 2024 Association Meeting.
Winter Festival Committee: The Hickory Carnival/Festival is one of our largest community events for students, families, and neighbors. We need multiple volunteers for various subcommittees, including games/prizes, entertainment, silent auction/raffle, food trucks, and arts & crafts. This committee will begin meeting in October, with the event tentatively scheduled for February.
Please email volunteers@hickorypta.net for more information. Thank you for considering volunteering!
Emergency Kits
We still have a few pre-assembled emergency kits available for sale. Please email hello@hickorypta.net if you would like to purchase one.
