No Limits Nebraska Youth Leadership Team Applications Rolling Out April 1, 2024!!
Have you heard? No Limits Nebraska Youth Leadership Team is coming back! Some of you may recall a youth movement for tobacco prevention and cessation called No Limits. Due to funding and COVID, this group has not been active.
The best news is we are calling on youth from all corners of Nebraska to apply and join a movement to take down big tobacco! Did you know, in 2021, according to YRBS data, 23% of Nebraska high school students reported using some kind of commercial tobacco product in the past year? Nearly half of those reporting they actively use tobacco products have tried to quit.
Please encourage your incoming 9th through 11th grade youth to apply! Applications will be available beggining April 1. This will be a wonderful opportunity to learn leadership skills and take down big tobacco Nebraska!
Attention Mini Grant Awardees! Please be mindful of the following deadlines!
Just a friendly reminder to use the reimbursement form to record expenses and the NDE 28-003 form as part of the reimbursement submission (usually handled by a school districts bookkeep or accounting staff).
Funds must be spent by April 15th, 2024 (the last day of the grant award) and the request for reimbursement must be submitted not later than June 1, 2024.
When you complete your event and your public service announcement/promotion video clip/social media posts fill out the evaluation/success story form, evaluations and success stories by April 15, 2024. What's in Your School's Tobacco-Free Policy?
Policy is the force that can result in positive change. How many of you have examined your current policy on tobacco-free schools? Is it comprehensive?
Commercial tobacco use with youth is concerning. Here in Nebrsaka, 23% of Nebraska high school students reported using some type of tobacco product (YRBS Data, 2021). Nearly half of youth using commercial tobacco products, have a desire to quit.
The number one way to help facilitate change in your school, and the amount of tobacco products being used by students is to address your policy. Think about the following questions as you examine what you have in place:
1. Does your policy address the current Nebraska Clean Indoor Act? Note that it includes e-cigarettes.
2. Does your policy address the impacts of tobacco product use on brain development in youth?
3. Does your policy reflect supportive and restorative approaches to tobacco related discipline?
Check out resources for examining and designing your tobacco-free policy at Tobacco Free School Toolkit from Tobacco Free Nebraska as well as Tobacco-Free District Model Policy from the American Heart Association/Alliance for a Healthier Genration/CVS Health Foundation.
