Maize South High School
A message from Principal Ms. Becky Sailor
Greetings Mavs!
Where has the year gone?! I can’t believe it’s the first day of May. This is an exciting week at Maize South as we celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week, begin AP testing, have our Senior Meeting, and begin the post season for spring activities.
Teacher Appreciation Week
Teacher Appreciation Week is May 1st - 5th. We have the most hardworking and dedicated teachers at Maize South and please help me in letting them know how much they are appreciated. A short email or note of appreciation and kind words goes a long way. We will continue to honor our teachers and staff this week with gifts of gratitude with our Teacher Appreciation theme, “Rock’n’Roll.”
Senior Events
Leading up to Graduation, seniors have several other events to celebrate many of their accomplishments. The last day for seniors to attend classes is May 17th. The Senior Parade will begin at 9:00 am on May 17th, and Senior Awards will be at 6:30 pm that evening. Senior Breakfast will be May 22nd at 8:30 am in the MSHS Commons, followed by Graduation Practice at 10:00 at Hartman Arena. The MSHS Class of 2023 will graduate on Monday, May 22nd at Hartman Arena. The ceremony begins at 6:30 pm. Senior parents and students - if you have any questions about graduation or preparation for the ceremony please reach out to an administrator or counselor.
Finals and Maverick Mayhem
We have made a slight modification to the finals schedule I shared with you last month. The schedule below only applies to current 9th - 11th grade students since seniors will already have completed their school year.
Students will be provided a list of activities pending confirmation of our offerings in the afternoon. Students are not able to take finals early. For families that know their student is going to miss the last few days of the semester, there is a process to complete so that the student is able to make up their finals in June.
Students who will miss finals need to have their parent contact the student’s alpha administrator
A - G - Mrs. Klock aklock@usd266.com
H - O - Mrs. Fowler mfowler@usd266.com
P - Z - Mr. Nash dnash@usd266.com
Parents may give their student permission to leave campus during "off" times. "Off" times are those times during the school day in which finals are not being taken. Our office staff will not be able to answer the volume of calls and track down students on the 23rd and 24th. If parents would like their student to be allowed to leave campus for part or all of the "off" times, please complete this form. For planning purposes, please complete this form by Monday, May 22nd.
Planning for 2023-2024
This summer we have several groups that will be working and planning for next school year. Several of our teachers are participating in Summer Learning Academies in which they will collaborate and work with curriculum during their professional development. We also have a workgroup that is focusing on our student incentive Gold Card initiative. We are excited to begin planning for another great year in 2023-2024. In August we will welcome several new Mavericks to Maize South High including,
Chelsie Baldwin - Theatre/English
Ashley George - English
Aundrea Tinkler - Special Education - FAA
Madison George - Science
Reece Petty - Physical Education
Chantel Armenta - Science
Sharon Sanders - Special Education IRIS
Eric Nichols - Special Education IRIS
Emily Stefan - Choir
As we wrap up the school year, I want to say thank you again for making this a great year. Our students and staff are incredibly lucky to have parent involvement and support. I hope everyone has a safe and healthy summer, and I look forward to seeing you in August.
Mavs Up!

To help improve your ACT score, consider the ACT PowerPrep class on April 11th & 12th, 6:30 pm-9:30 pm at Maize South High School. Registration is online HERE.

College & Career Center
It’s never too early or too late for students to begin preparing for their future after high school.
Below are just a few ideas for students as they make plans for summer.
College Comparison charts are a great way to make sure students choose the college that best fits their needs. If you are in the class of 2024 college applications open July 1. Applications can be completed even before your senior year begins!
Campus visits allow students to gather information from an admissions representative and receive a guided tour of campus. If a student is interested in a particular major, upon request a visit to a specific department and advisor can be scheduled.
Scholarships - it is never too early for students to begin looking for scholarships. Two useful websites are www.scholarships.com and www.fastweb.com Remember, never pay for scholarship searches.
Volunteering - Summer is an opportune time for students to give back to their community and possibly gain insight on a future career. Volunteering can make a difference, as well as, build personal growth and self esteem.
Yearbook
The last day to buy a yearbook is May 13th.
Are you wanting to recognize your senior in the yearbook? Senior ads ARE available through this link: https://www.jostens.com/apps/store/customer/1873667/Maize-South-High-School/.
Spots range from 1/6 ($70) of a page to a full page ($530). Parents are now able to fully customize their senior's purchased spot by choosing the layout/design and the message/photos they want to share. You have to create an account first.
If you don't want to purchase a spot, but still want to purchase a yearbook of memories for your senior, you can do so at jostensyearbooks.com. Or if you have any questions, please contact Madison Loomis at mloomis@usd266.com or Travis Feil (Jostens rep) at Travis.Feil@jostens.com.

Seven Mavericks competed at the Business Professionals of America National Leadership Conference in Anaheim, California. Braelyn Delzer, Kaitlin Kelley, Fernanda Banuelos, Katelyn Pfeifer, Dallen Marshall, Rafael Martinez, and Cannon Reed.
Students in Community Connections with Mrs. Buchanan have been working hard serving our Wichita community. Once a week they visit our friends at Meaningful Life Foundation and have been working on a project for Mother’s Day! Several times they have weaved ribbon through crocheted cradles for an organization in town called Bridget’s Cradle’s. They serve parents who suffer infant loss in all 50 states! They have organized the resource room at Restoration Family Services. On top of serving, they have toured the Ronald McDonald House, St. Anthony’s family shelter, Habitat for Humanity ReStore, The Lord’s Dinner, DCCCA, Humane Society, and many more! Each time we serve and visit, they are blown away by the resources available in our city!
From the Attendance Office
If you need your student released during the school day, please contact the attendance office at 316-462-8000 as soon as possible so we can get a pass to them. The more advanced notice we have, the easier it will be to ensure your child is able to leave on time.
School Year Reminders
- Because students are not allowed to bring balloons or glass items on the bus, the Maize school district will not be accepting any flower, candy, cookie, or balloon bouquet deliveries to students.
- If your student is going to be tardy to school, please call the office. They are allowed three parent excused 1st block tardies per year, after that they are subject to detention.
- When a student is absent, it is the responsibility of the parents to call the attendance office within 24 hours to verify the reason for the absence. Please be sure to provide a doctor's note to the front office when your child has seen the doctor, dentist, etc., these visits won't count against your child's attendance. Medical notes can also be faxed to 462-8001.
- If you need to pick up your child from school during school hours, please call the office with the time your child needs to be released. They will receive a pass ahead of time and can check themselves out at the requested time. The exception to this, is lunch time. If you wish to check your student out for lunch, a parent must come in and sign the student out. Parents are not required to sign students back in.
- We have a "closed lunch" policy. Students will be expected to eat at school and NO OUTSIDE FOOD may be brought in or delivered.
- If your child is absent and will require homework, please email the teacher.
Thank you for your help with this. We appreciate it!
Driver Education
USD 266 Maize offers Online Driver Education each term during the school year. The online
driver education program strives to prepare students to become knowledgeable and respectful
of the law; to learn basic driving skills; and to develop a responsible attitude toward driving.
The instructors will provide critical experience to students; involve parents in the process, and
foster cooperative interaction with others in the driving environment. Students should be
studying the Kansas Driver Handbook and be ready to take a handbook test at the start of the
course. Students that have a Kansas Permit that is valid through the course dates will be
exempt from taking the handbook test. More detailed information on Online Driver Education
can be found on the high school website, (click on Counselor, Enrollment and Course Information, then Driver Education).
Online Driver Education 2022-2023: Both the Student and the Parent/Guardian must attend the
enrollment night in order to be in Online Dr. Ed. Each term class is limited to 50 students.
Enrollment packets may be picked up in the counseling office or downloaded off the high
school website.
**Both the Student and one Parent/Guardian will be required to attend the enrollment
meeting. Please bring your enrollment packet, a writing pen, corrective eye wear (if needed)
and any type of Kansas Permit/License you already have to the Enrollment Meeting**
