EHS Principal's Update:Week 2

The first week of the 2023-24 school year is complete and it was a ROARing success! Please Mark your calendars for Back to School Night on Wednesday, 9/4/2024. This will be a great opportunity to see our school's clubs and programs and meet your child's teachers.

During the first week of school, our EHS students participated in school-wide behavior and attendance lessons in an effort to clearly communicate policies and expectations for the school year. Our EHS Teachers utilized AVID lessons to foster classroom relationships and create a culture of collaboration among our Lion family. Students also learned about school-wide academic supports available to them and opportunities to get involved in activities, clubs, and athletic programs.

One great way for students to participate on campus is by becoming an ASB card holder. ASB cards are on sale now at the student store for $20 through September 8th. Don't wait to buy your card! Prices increase to $30 after September 8th. This is a great way for students to save money on ticket costs for athletic games and ASB activities through out the year.

Athletics has kicked off for the school year with football, cross country and volleyball already underway. Several winter sports teams are also practicing to get ready for the winter season. If you have a student who would like to participate in atheltics, they will need athletic clearance in order to participate. Athletic clearance also requires having a medical physical from a doctor's office. The physicians below offer this service to EHS students for $25 dollars.

Before and Afterschool Tutoring begins on August 26th. Before school tutoring will be Monday through Friday starting at 7:40 AM. After school tutoring will be held Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 3:50 PM-4:40 PM. Students who wish to attend tutoring need to report to the library during these times.

This is a friendly reminder that as we begin the 2023-2024 school year, we want to provide a positive learning environment for all students. As a reminder, all students will be expected to follow the student dress code which includes but is not limited to the following:

• Clothing must cover and conceal undergarments and all

• No tube tops, tops without straps are not allowed

• Tank tops with oversized arms or undershirt tank tops are not allowed

• No clothing, backpacks, or accessories that have images or content that is sexually suggestive, depict drugs, alcohol, tobacco use, or other illegal activities.

This week we will be addressing the dress code issues and speaking with students. Students will be asked to change and/or be given a shirt to wear and items can be picked up at the end of the day. These rules apply on the school grounds and at all school functions.

NWEA testing for Math, Science, and English was completed last week in order to ensure students were placed in appropriate courses as well as get students any and all supports they may need to be academically successful this school year and beyond. Please be aware we will be continuing to balance classes and changing student schedules to better accommodate their academic success over the next week, so please bear with us as these schedule changes occur.

Does your student need additional social emotional support at EHS? EHS offers many on campus student support groups to support our Lions through the many issues today's teens may be dealing with. If you would like to refer your student for a student support group, please scan the QR code and complete the google form.

Some examples of Student Support Groups offered at EHS are:

Mood Group, Anxiety, Life Skills, Anger Management, Grief/Loss, Conflict Resolution, and Substance Abuse.

You can also use the form to suggest a group your student may benefit from.

Scholarships and grants are helpful ways to fund your child’s college education. They provide you with free money that can go towards tuition or other educational expenses.This year we have partnered with Going Merry to make completing the FAFSA and finding scholarships easier than ever! Please have your student go to the School Counseling Office for assistance.

EHS parents/guardians have three options for viewing their student's grades, assignments, and attendance.

1. AV High School District App (Lion Link) - This app gives you new, information, as well as your student's progress. It is available on both the Apple App Store and Google App Store. When in the app store, search for AVUHSD and download the app.
2. PowerSchool App - This app ties right into your PowerSchool Parent Portal. You will get live updates on grades, assignments, and attendance. This app is also found on the Apple App Store and Google App Store. Search for PowerSchool and use district code: NWMZ.

There are some helpful links below to get your PowerSchool Parent Portal account set up for the school year.

If you need to clear an absence, please email the EHS Attendance office at ehs-attendance@avhsd.org. Make sure to include your student's name, student ID number, date of absence, reason for the absence, your name, and relationship to the student. You may also call the attendance office at 661-946-3800 Extensions 1050 (A-L) and 1045 (M-Z).
