Hello Dorr Families,
At this time of year we reflect on what we are thankful for. The Dorr PTO is at the top of our list. Since the first of the year they have sponsored so many events: Carnival, the Walkathon, and Popcorn Days, to name a few. Right around the corner is Santa’s Secret Shop, another yearly tradition at Dorr. Anyone can be involved in the PTO!! Join us at meetings and in planning the fun events ahead.
We thank our PTO for all they do,
Mrs. Seniura.
My Child Is Sick. What Do I Do?
The cold and flu season is approaching. Dorr Elementary is already seeing an influx of sickness in the classrooms. Please help us stop the spread of these nasty viruses by following these guidelines.
- If you need to call your student in ill, it is helpful if you give a brief list of symptoms, rather than "my student is sick". Reporting symptoms helps us identify possible outbreaks.
- Please keep your student home if they have a fever. Students are welcome to return to school once they are fever free without medication for 24 hours.
- Please keep your student home if they are vomiting or have diarrhea. Students are welcome to return once they are vomit/ diarrhea free without the use of medication for 24 hours.
Attendance Questions Explained
Students are expected to be in their seats, ready to learn by 8:50am each day. Students who arrive AFTER 8:50am but BEFORE 9:05am will be marked as AM TARDY. Students who arrive AFTER 9:05am will be marked as 1/2 day AM ABSENT.
Students are expected to complete the school day at 3:50pm. Students who need to be picked up between 3:30pm and 3:49pm will be marked as PM TARDY. Students leaving BEFORE 3:30pm will be marked as 1/2 day PM ABSENT.
If your student is ill, please contact the office to report their absence. It is helpful if you report the students symptoms as it helps us identify break outs of illnesses across classrooms and grades.
Students who are absent will be coded as follows:
Unexcused absence: Students who are absent for illness or other reason, and parent has notified the office will be marked as unexcused absence. The reason for absence will be noted.
Unknown absence: Students who are absent and the office has received no communication from parent/guardian will be marked as unknown absence.
Excused absence: Students who are absent and return with a doctors note that includes the dates/times the student is to be excused, will be marked as excused absence.
Students who obtain 5 & 7 unexcused or unknown absences during the school year will receive a letter from the school bringing the absences to your attention.
Students who obtain 10 unexcused and/or unknown absences during the year will be asked to meet with the principal and may be subject to truancy. Wayland Union Schools district policy outlining attendance can be found in the student handbook.
Y5's-5th Grade Student Handbook
The Student Handbook has been updated for the 2024-2025 school year. Please take a look at our Student Handbook to familiarize yourself with our policies, procedures, and expectations. For your convenience, we have included a link directly to the handbook. This information can also be found on our website, waylandunion.org under student links.
Community Warmth
Recently 2 area groups joined forces to keep our students warm this winter! The Knights of Columbus and OpenRoad Brewery in Wayland worked in collaboration to raise money and purchase brand new winter jackets for our students in need! We appreciate our community support. It definitely takes a village, and ours is one of the best around! Thank you for your thoughtfulness and generous donation!

Social Worker Spotlight
Safe Harbor will be joining Dorr Elementary on November 18th, 19th, and 20th. Safe Harbor is a nonprofit organization that provides children with healing through a number of services at no cost to the victims or their families. They partner with schools throughout Allegan, such as Hopkins, Wayland, Fennville, and more. Safe Harbor presents appropriate body safety lessons to grade levels. One of their goals in schools is to educate students about safe and unsafe touches, as well as what children should do if they feel unsafe.
Happening In The Halls
Teachers Are Students Too!
Students enjoyed the day off of school after Halloween but for the teachers, class was in session. Teachers participated in a full school day of learning and collaborating with teachers from Baker and Steeby Elementary Schools. They learned new ways to present lessons, and shared fun ways they teach in their classroom!
It's Turkey Season!
Turkeys are popping up at Dorr Elementary as we enter into the Thanksgiving season. Mrs, Licari's 3rd graders made some beautiful turkeys this week!
