The SMMUSD Wave- Nov.2024
A Message from Superintendent Dr. Antonio Shelton
Dear Parents, Guardians, Staff, Students, and Community Members,
November is a time to reflect on gratitude and community. This season offers an opportunity to focus on the values that bring us together and the commitments we hold as a school district to our students, families, and staff.
We are thrilled to announce the successful passage of both facility improvement project bonds, Measure QS for Santa Monica schools and Measure MM for Malibu schools. These bonds received significant support from their respective communities, underscoring the trust and shared understanding of the critical need for improved facilities. These enhancements will directly benefit our students’ academic success and overall well-being. We extend our heartfelt thanks to all the voters for their confidence in our vision, and we deeply appreciate the dedication of our volunteers who spread awareness about the importance of these measures. With many planned projects already in the design phase, we are excited to create future-ready indoor and outdoor learning environments that empower our students academically and socially.
Recent events across the nation have drawn attention to hateful and racist messages circulating in various communities. I want to reiterate that racism, in any form, has no place in our society or in the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District. Our schools are, and will continue to be, safe spaces for learning, growth, and inclusion. Every student, regardless of their background, belongs here, and we remain unwavering in our mission to foster an environment where all students feel seen, respected, and valued.
As we head into the holiday season, our campuses are alive with activities and programs that celebrate the creativity, generosity, and achievements of our students. From food drives and community service projects to concerts and performances, our students are embodying the spirit of giving and connection. I encourage you to support these efforts by attending events and engaging with your school community.
As Thanksgiving approaches, I want to take a moment to thank all of you for your dedication and partnership. Your efforts help ensure that SMMUSD continues to thrive and that every student has the opportunity to succeed.
Please remember to support the Santa Monica Education Foundation and the Malibu Education Foundation on Giving Tuesday, Dec. 3. Your donations go a long way toward supporting programs that benefit all students. More information in the Education Foundation Corner below.
Finally, I wish everyone a safe and relaxing Thanksgiving recess, with schools closed starting Wednesday, Nov. 27. May this time bring moments of rest, reflection, and connection with loved ones. We look forward to welcoming everyone back on Monday, Dec. 2, 2024, as we prepare for a successful finish to the calendar year.
Sincerely,
Dr. Antonio Shelton
Superintendent

SMMUSD School Board Adopts Inclusive Schools Week Resolution
The SMMUSD Board of Education adopted a resolution in support of Inclusive Schools Week, Dec. 2-6, 2024 at its Nov. 21, 2024 meeting.
Inclusive Schools Week is an event held each year during the first full week in December. Since its inception in 2001, Inclusive Schools Week has celebrated the progress that schools have made in providing a supportive and quality education to an increasingly diverse student population, including students who are marginalized due to disability, gender, socio-economic status, cultural heritage, language preference, and other factors. The week also provides an important opportunity for educators, students and parents to discuss what else needs to be done in order to ensure that their schools continue to improve their ability to successfully educate all children.
SMMUSD staff hase worked hard to provide inclusive education for all students. SMMUSD provides collaborative education, push-in services, and programs that promote appreciation of diversity. The school board and district leadership are proud of the work that has been done and will continue to support all students and their individual needs, both academically and social emotionally.
Samohi Dr. Tebb Kusserow Heritage Display Dedication
Samohi held a beautiful dedication of its heritage display case in the Discovery Cafeteria honoring Dr. Tebb Kusserow, 11.24.24. Current and former students and football players, administrators, family and friends joined in the dedication. Dr. Kusserow shared stories with the guests and he and his family unveiled the display filled with sports memorabilia. The Samohi choir sang the Hymn of Praise.
Dr. Kusserow graduated from Samohi's winter class in 1961. He was an All-CIF football player and participated in the Annual Shrine Football Game. He was an All-American player at Santa Monice City College and when an injury ended his playing days he earned his Doctorate at USC in physical education specializing in ancient history, movement, and interscholastic sports. He taught for 31 years at Samohi, was a mentor teacher, department chairperson, and curriculum designer.
He was the head football coach for 17 years with 122 wins, the most in school history. His teams reached the CIF-SS Championship game three times and won two titles. He has been inducted into the CIF-SS Hall of Fame (CIF-SS Coach of the Year in 1981), received Samohi’s Distinguished Service Award and PTA Lifetime Service Award.
To honor Viking history, he helped to launch the Samohi archive research and development program to honor both the city and the high school. Tebb wrote Defining Moments in Samohi Football History, seven historical narratives defining iconic periods in sports and Viking campus life. He spearheaded the digitization of the school newspaper, The Samohi, and has helped to maintain complete sets of the school yearbook, The Nautilus.
Congratulations to Dr. Tebb Kusserow and thank you for the memories and ongoing work to document Samohi sports history.
Dr. Kusserow’s guiding principles have always been “commitment, sincerity, honor, and service.” He truly loves Santa Monica High School and all the students who have blessed his life.

Santa Monica Education Foundation Raising $100K in One Day!
This Giving Tuesday (Tuesday, December 3), join the Santa Monica Ed Foundation in the spirit of generosity to help build a brighter future for our students. Together, we can ensure every child has access to vibrant educational experiences that inspire learning and growth.
On this global day of giving, we are aiming to raise $100,000 in a single day. This year, Kindo AI has generously pledged $25,000 as a Flash Match, which means every dollar donated will help unlock their match. When our community raises $25,000, Kindo AI’s gift will double it to $50,000, bringing us halfway to our goal!
You can donate and monitor our progress on Giving Tuesday with a thermometer that is updated in real time at www.smedfoundation.org.
This Giving Tuesday, Support Malibu Students!
Join us in raising $20,000 to fund staff and programs that directly support student success at all four of Malibu’s public schools. Your gift will help get Malibu Education Foundation closer to its annual goal of $750,000 for vital resources across all four schools, including eight elementary school instructional aides (four per school), the Middle School Athletics Program, Math Tutors, the high school Strength & Conditioning Coach.
Atticus Moffat (pictured with Athletic Coordinator Daryl Adams) is a great example of what Malibu Education Foundation seeks to achieve by supporting vital staff and staffed programs. Atticus developed a love for running by participating in Track & Field when MMS Athletics launched this Spring, and then joined the Cross Country team in the Fall - and ran the 5k in Malibu Moves where he placed first in his age group this October. Help us create more success stories for our students!
As The Shark Fund and elementary school PTAs continue to raise funds to support unique schools site needs, Malibu Education Foundation ensure vital staff and staffed programs remain to ensure every student in Malibu thrives.
Visit malibueducationfoundation.org to donate today. Also, stop by the Holiday Market + Tree Lot, open daily from 11.29 - 12.15 and also supporting our four schools through Malibu Education Foundation!
