Second Step Program for Grades K - 5 at Addams
We are excited to welcome back the Second Step program to Addams for grades K- 5. This is made possible with support from the Royal Oak Youth Assistance. This organization does countless things to support our students and families.
We are thrilled to have retired Royal Oak teachers Michele Crysler (K-2) and William VanFleteren (3-5) teaching these lessons to each classroom.
K-2 will be on Thursdays. Each lesson will be 15 - 20 minutes.
3-5 Will be on Fridays. Each lesson will be 20-30 minutes.
These lessons are age appropriate and engaging for all students. The main topics of these lessons include:
Growth Mindset & Goal-Setting: Children learn how to pay attention and manage distractions, develop a growth mindset, and apply goal-setting strategies to their social and academic lives.
Emotion Management: Children learn how to identify and label emotions and use emotion management strategies—including stress management for older students—to calm strong feelings.
Empathy & Kindness: Children learn how to recognize kindness and act kindly, have empathy for others and take others’ perspectives, and recognize kind acts and empathy as important elements of building and maintaining relationships.
Problem-Solving: Children learn how to identify and state a problem, recognize if a problem is an accident, and use the STEP problem-solving process:
S: Say the problem
T: Think of solutions
E: Explore the outcomes
P: Pick a solution
We are grateful to have the ability to provide these experiences for our students. You can learn more about Second Step here. Please let me know if you have any questions.
ROHS Homecoming Festivities
The ROHS Homecoming Parade, Tailgate, and Football Game are Friday, October 11th at Royal Oak High School! It ends in front of the stadium where there is a tailgate open to the entire community that includes free food, live music, games, and other fun activities. After the tailgate, please join us as we cheer on the ROHS Ravens Varsity Football Team as they take on Pontiac. Game starts at 7pm.
