Principal's Message
Community,
We have made it through the first month of 2025! I hope you all are doing well as we have a lot to share as February approaches.
We launch Yondr pouches on Monday, February 3rd! Please refer to the details below as it is critical that we are all on the same page moving forward. Every student will be expected to have a pouch and students with cell phones and smart watches are expected to use their pouch for these devices. If you have a concern, please reach out to our main office so we can schedule time to meet.
STARTING MONDAY, FEBRUARY 3RD, HARRIET TUBMAN MIDDLE SCHOOL WILL BE A PHONE FREE CAMPUS FROM THE MOMENT SCHOOL STARTS UNTIL THE MOMENT SCHOOL IS OUT.
Thank you to those of you who were able to join us for our Lunar New Year celebration tonight! It was a special event with so much joy! Huge shout-out to our Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) affinity group for putting it together!
At Harriet Tubman MS, we will be celebrating Black History Month with several initiatives. To name a few, we will have lessons and learning opportunities going on all month in Advisory, our Black Student Union (BSU) will host an assembly for our building and February will culminate with our Black Student Excellence event on Wednesday, February 26th!
Take care

Please refer to these resources for our policy, general information and slides we used to communicate with our kids:

We are thrilled to invite you to join us in celebrating the outstanding achievements of our Black students at the Harriet Tubman Celebration of Black Student Excellence Awards on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, from 6:00–7:30 PM!
This special event is a powerful opportunity to honor and uplift the talents, resilience, and leadership of our students who reflect the core value of the Center for Black Student Excellence (CBSE): self-awareness, perseverance, community connection, accountability, and leadership.
Thank you for being a vital part of this celebration. We look forward to honoring our students with you in style!

Portland Interscholastic League (PIL)
The PPS middle grades (6th - 8th) youth sports program, with the exception of recreational soccer, is directed by the Portland Interscholastic League (PIL). The student athletes represent their neighborhood high school cluster. Thanks in part to the financial support of many individuals, PIL Youth Sports offers football, cross country and girls' volleyball in the fall; girls' and boys' basketball and wrestling in the winter; and baseball and co-ed track and field in the spring. Fall season begins in late August, winter practices begin in mid November and spring practices begin in late February. Details for each sport can be found on the PIL website under "PIL Youth Sports".

Per PPS policy, all students are required to wear their school I.D. badge during the school day. We have supplied lanyards and holders for all students. There are no exceptions to the policy.
Parent / Guardian Visits
At Harriet Tubman Middle School, we would love for you to visit your student and to support our building! Please make sure to sign in at the office and if you would like to stay, per district safety policy, you will be asked to show your ID and will receive a visitor badge. Please remember to return to the main office to sign out.
If you would like to visit a classroom, you will need to provide educators with a 24 hour notice. This can be done via email or over the phone with the educator.
All volunteers must have a background check. Ask our front office how to get that going!
Code of Conduct Agreement
Harriet Tubman Middle School has several policies and expectations for our students and our Code of Conduct Agreement (CCA) outlines each of them. You will see expectations for students in regards to our general building expectations (A.S.K.), our attendance system (ASERT), behavior referrals and discipline ladder, cell phone policy, social media and attire expectations as well as our food policy.
Our goal is to create a safe and inclusive environment for all students. It is your responsibility to review our building expectations and to ensure both you and your student/s understand HTMS and PPS expectations and policies.
If you have any questions and or concerns, please reach out to our team for support.
